?

I learnt French at school for some 3 years, and I am amazed that I still remember the following:"Allons enfants de la Patrie, Le jour de gloire est arrive!"Many people will recognise this as La Marseillaise, the historical French national anthem! Translated into English, it means "Arise, children of the Fatherland, The day of glory has arrived!".

But, you may well say, what has this to do with an article on Weekend Notes? Well, the answer lies in the heading "At Dans le Noir", which literally translated means "In the Dark". Yes, this is going to be dining with a real difference! Organisers of this event like to think that the "day of the French sensory journey has arrived!"

And furthermore, the good news is that you won't have to travel 20 hours to get to France.

To celebrate Bastille Day, there will be a unique French Week at the restaurant. You are all invited to discover or in some cases, to re-discover the tastes of France in the dark.

Dans Le Noir? is in the Como Hotel and the event will be held from Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th July, from 6:30 pm. The address is 630 Chapel Street, South Yarra. The experience in the darkroom lasts between 2 and 2 and half hours.

In order to be surprised and so that you don't have to travel to France for good French food, France is coming all the way to Melbourne.

Oo-la-la! French food is delicious and this Bastille evening will be an exquisite surprise menu. The head chef will especially design the meal for the occasion, and you will "explore your senses" in this authentic and interesting meal.

There will be two surprise menus:

  • The well-known Feed Me Chef (100% surprise menu)
  • And the Vegan/Vegetarian option

  • You will be able to frome among a limited choice of surprise menus. The idea of this menu is that you should not know exactly what you will be eating… well, not exactly but just the general category!

It is all about the French flavours, aromas, textures and seasonings. This is a method sometimes used in the industry called "blind tasting".

The concept behind the menu is to re-educate people's palate and mind, to make you experience the flavours being presented. You will be devoid of light, your eyes can't deceive you, so therefore all your preconceptions are gone! In the dark, we use our other senses to hear, touch, smell and to taste. Tasting in the dark means coming back to "fundamentals". So, no matter your food preferences, you will be covered to enjoy this meal!

You can read more about the general surprise menus at this #post_1655_title ">link.

Wow - this is going to be exciting! Oh, this will be fine French food and wine, which will have you saying "bon appetit" to whoever is sitting next to you! There are no hidden costs and it will not be more expensive simply because it is a special Bastille Day French week! No way!

No need to speak French either as the amazing team of blind and low vision guides will host you during this amazing experience. It is an English-speaking service with just a twist of French accent from your hosts.

No, you will not be served weird French food - there is nothing weird on your plate at Dans le Noir? at The Como Melbourne. You will not get the dreaded (and much loved by many) snails or frog's legs - you will enjoy a delightful French menu with fresh products.

Dans le Noir ? means "in the dark" and is so much more than a fabulous dining experience. This restaurant will enable you to "take a few tentative steps in the shoes of another" - a person who is blind or who has low vision.

It is also an opportunity for you to understand that people with a disability are able to adapt, as you are. This event will be something very different, and one that is also fun!

Prices for this evening are as follows:
  • Feed Me Chef and Seasoned Vegan are each $95 for three courses and $115 for five courses. You will be able to have a matched French wine option also.

  • The concept behind this company and the dining experience is fascinating and before you go, you must #post_1701_title ">read all about it here.
