Since studying French at university, I have always looked forward to March/April as that is when Alliance Francaise hosts their national French Film Festival. This year it is on again, although it is a little more special as it the 30th year that it has been running.
The festival opened last Thursday with The Trouble With You, a comedy that was a massive hit at Cannes 2018. The film centres around detective Yvonne who lost her husband in the line of duty. She tells their young son of his bravery, and as such she is horrified to hear that her husband was not the person she had thought he was. Yvonne then attempts to do everything she can to write the wrongs, with hilarious results. Those who missed the opening night needn't worry as the film will be replayed through the festival.
During the festival there will be a number of highlights, including Her Canberra Ladies Night where the movie Dumped will be shown. It's a comedy, where two sisters from two sides of the same coin join forces to take their mother on a vacation to the island of Le Reunion after being dumped by her husband for a younger woman. After one of the daughter tries to give her mother a confidence boost, the trip unintentionally spirals out of control.
The Romantic Comedy evening will feature the film Rolling to You. In this romantic comedy, Jocelyn a serial liar and a womaniser, is caught off guard when a pretty caregiver thinks he is a paraplegic. Things get complicated when he falls in love with her sister.
The Gastronomy Night will feature the documentary Wine Calling. The documentary introduces the audience to the renegades who have shaken up the French wine industry. In changing the status quo they are improving the taste and sustainability.
The last highlight of the French Film festival will be the closing night with the comedy Kiss & Tell. Julien's son, Alex, finds out that 17 year-old Eva has neglected to tell him he's going to be a father. While Julien's wife, Lucie, feels exasperated by her husband Julien's paranoid delusions, and Julien's lover, Serena, senses his lies. It's all a sidesplitting mess!
With numerous event evenings as well as films of various genres including drama, thrillers, comedy, romance, horror, and adventure there is sure to be something for everybody at the 2019 French Film Festival!
