There are not too many school fetes where you can expect to find snails (escargot) on the lunch menu, but then this is no ordinary fete.

Camberwell Primary School is a bilingual school. Children spend 50% of their homeroom time speaking and learning in French.

That means that when it comes to culinary fare you'll get a lot more than the usual chocolate crackles and hot chips. There will be crêpes and baguettes, French onion soup, pomme frites (French fries) and much more.

As Marie Antoinette famously said or didn't say depending on which history book you read: "Let them eat gâteaux" and there will be some fine cakes for sale.

To add to all things French, they will be selling authentic croissants and pains au chocolat from LaTropezienne. Come and indulge 'avec un café'.

The tricolour will be everywhere, so roll out the red white and blue.

Kids can enjoy any number of carnival rides, such as dodgem cars and whirling tea cups and a giant slide

There are two new attractions this year. The Wall That Rocks is a a real thrill. Climbers are harnessed in with a self-belaying system as they climb up the wall. When they reach the top they gently push off and enjoy the safe gentle ride coming down.

There is also the new Kite Flyer. You lie down on your stomach while the ride gently rises in the air, rotating and oscillating in a gentle wave pattern.

There is also a petting zoo for the little ones.

There will be lots of toys, books and games for sale and a fantastic silent auction. As well as lots of delicious produce for sale. The fete is famous for its jams.

You will also find some fantastic entertainment including High Voltage Rock. It is also lovely to hear the students singing songs in French and English.

The Camberwell Primary School is the closest you will get to Paris, without the expensive airfare.

Your Comment
Does the school teach such a high proportion of French because it has a lot of pupils with a French background, or do all the kids start out as novices in the language when they come to the school? I think it is great that they put such an emphasis on language. If all schools did something like this, then children would learn other languages butter better.
