Florence Thiriot, who is part of the dynamic team at Alliance Française de Brisbane, has mesmerised art lovers and historians since 2015 with her knowledge and insight of all aspects of French art. Whether you have studied Art History, or, just enjoy looking at beautiful things, you will improve your understanding and pleasure by listening to Florence.

The current series of talks during French Art Fridays has been designed to cover all the significant aspects of French art and its development inside the 'Old Regime' of France. By coming along you will learn how French Art developed in the Kingdom of France from anonymous medieval artists to the romantic and passionate painters of the early 19th century. Understand how the artists' subjects developed so dramatically during the period and the changes that took place in the visions and representations by the artists' and how they correlated with a changing world. You will come to appreciate how the artists' role and their social standing developed during this period.

The period known as the French Renaissance started in the late 15th century. Prevented by the 100 Year War between France and England development of the country's cultural and artistic movements had fallen behind the works of Italian and Flemish artists. In fact, it was Italian and Flemish artists who made most of the initial artistic changes in France.

The French Renaissance represents a break from the Middle Ages, and, during the evening, Florence will demonstrate the development of the French Renaissance movement through its most famous architectural and pictorial achievements.

As the third of five fabulous talks, you should also mark your diary for the two remaining French Art Fridays in 2017. The topics and their dates are:
  • France Great Century, Friday, 27 October at 6.30pm; and
  • French Revolution and the Age of Romantics, Friday, 1 December at 6.30pm.

  • Florence Thiriot, is a French teacher at Alliance Français de Brisbane and, as you will see, is completely passionate about art.

Born into a family of art specialists, Florence been moved by her love of art across several continents. She grew up in the shadow of the Ecole des Beaux Arts and has spent her life between Europe, West Africa and finally Australia.

Florence's talks always reveal something new and interesting about French art and her enthusiasm for the topis will increase your enjoyment of the evening. And besides, where else can you have an evening of fun in a friendly atmosphere while sipping a glass of fine French wine?

As an added bonus, Florence can also provide a valuable insider's guide to the best museums and galleries in Paris; Florence's knowledge is by no means limited to the Musée d'Orsay and Pompidou Centre.
