Event:
I dream my painting and paint my dream: Van Gogh

In a perfectly timed French Art Friday you can come along and learn about the great Ambroise Vollard the French art dealer who encouraged Picasso to realize what is acclaimed as the most beautiful series of engravings of the twentieth century, the famous 'Vollard Suite' now on display at the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).

Come to Alliance Française de Brisbane's French Art Friday first and learn the intricacies of the Suite so when you visit the Queensland Art Gallery before 15 April, 2018 you will be able to better appreciate these masterpieces currently on display in Gallery 4.

Alliance Française de Brisbane's Florence Thiriot will also discuss the legendary influence of Ambroise Vollard, the visionary and mythical Paris art dealer who possessed the ultimate collector's eye. Not only did he encourage Picasso but he also played a major role in the recognition of Modern Art with the organisation of the first exhibitions of such masters as Van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin and the Nabis, Picasso and Matisse.

Let Florence transport you back to Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century when you will hear about the celebrated 'Street of Pictures', rue Laffitte. It was here Vollard, who focused more on the personal anecdotes of those around him than the social and artistic movements, led a rich and fascinating life. His early endeavours led him to discover and be the first to sell the works of Cézanne, despite incredible opposition to Impressionism.

Exhibitions of Manet, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Mourey and many others greatly enhanced Vollard's influence and wealth.
