The Château de Versailles is one of the most beautiful achievements of 17th century French art. Built on the site of what was once one of King Louis XIII's hunting lodges the Chateau was transformed by his son Louis XIV into a grand palace. Louis XIV chose the site to build the palace that was to become the symbol of royal absolutism and the embodiment of classical French art. Once he had transformed the hunting lodge, Louis XIV moved his court and government from the Louvre to the palace in 1682.

The building was intended to display Louis XIV's royal power and impress visitors while also creating a golden cage within which he could control the French nobility.

The Château de Versailles remained the seat of power in France until 1789 and has continually developed its splendour throughout its existence.

Florence Thiriot is a French teacher at the Alliance Français de Brisbane and is completely passionate about art. She was born into a family of art specialists and took her passion for visual arts across several continents. After growing up in the shadow of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Florence spent her life between Europe, West Africa and finally Australia.

Florence's talks are sure to impart something new to your understanding of French art her enthusiasm will help add to the enjoyment of the evening. The other important question to be considered is; where else can you learn about French art in a fun and friendly atmosphere while sipping a glass of fine French wine?

During the evening you are sure to be uplifted by Florence's passion for French art as she provides insights into the subject's sociological and political context. You will also get a valuable insider's guide to the best museums and galleries in Paris which is not limited to the Musée d'Orsay and Pompidou Centre.
