They're back: the fantastically interesting and informative French Art Fridays presented at the Alliance Française de Brisbane, 262 Montague Road, West End. Five great evenings are being arranged for 2017 and the first will be on Friday, 26 May, 2017 starting at 6.30pm.

Admission to the 2017's French Art Fridays is $25 for Alliance Francaise members and $30 for non-members. Make sure you don't miss out and purchase your tickets on-line:
  • Alliance Francaise members here; and
  • Non-Members here.

  • Tickets include a glass of fine French wine.

    The Alliance Française de Brisbane launched these friendly conferences led by Florence Thiriot back in 2015 and whether you already know something about art history, or have an interest in the topic, these sociable chats are sure to add to your knowledge.

    French Art Fridays in 2017 will transport you through a thousand years of French Art History. Be fascinated with how French art developed in the Kingdom of France from anonymous medieval artists to the romantic and passionate painters of the early 19th century. Gain an understanding of how the subjects of their works expanded dramatically during the period together with how artists' vision and representation of the world changed. You will also see how their role as artists and their position in society developed significantly during the same period.

    Each of the French Art Fridays will cover different aspects of art as it progressed inside the 'Old Regime' of France. Starting out in the Middle Ages under the patronage of the Church, French art evolved in response to the various social advances resulting from the impacts of such movements as the Renaissance, Age of Enlightenment and the ideals of the French revolution. This was a millennium of massive transformations in artistic development.

    The first of these talks for 2017 will focus on the works of Vincent Van Gogh.

    The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is currently presenting a major exhibition titled, 'Van Gogh and the Seasons', until July, 2017. The Seasons are the focus of the exhibition because they had a profound significance for Van Gogh who saw them as the representation of the circle of life within nature; birth, bloom, maturity and death.

    Florence Thiriot, Alliance's resident French art expert, will discuss the influences and themes that dominated much of Van Gogh's work through his French journeys.

    There will be a further four French Art Fridays in 2017. The topics and their dates are:
  • Medieval Arts; Friday, 23 June at 6.30pm;
  • French Renaissance, Friday, 8 September at 6.30pm;
  • France Great Century, Friday, 27 October at 6.30pm; and
  • French Revolution and the Age of Romantics, Friday, 1 December at 6.30pm.

  • Your host on these evenings, Florence Thiriot, is a French teacher at Alliance Français de Brisbane and is completely passionate about art.

    Born into a family of art specialists Florence has taken her love of art across several continents. She grew up in the shadow of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and has spent her life between Europe, West Africa and finally Australia.

    Florence's talks will reveal something new and interesting about French art while her enthusiasm adds greatly to your enjoyment of the evening. And besides, where else can you have an evening of fun in a friendly atmosphere while sipping a glass of fine French wine?

    As an added bonus, Florence will also be able to provide a valuable insider's guide to the best museums and galleries in Paris; Florence's knowledge is, by no means limited to the Musée d'Orsay and Pompidou Centre.
