I can't seem to escape from Truffles this winter in Australia . Firstly there was acclaimed chef Shannon Bennett's truffle dinner at Bistro Vue . Then the truffle lunch at ZaZa's Cucina Italiana followed by the conversation with leading French chef Philippe Mouchel about Truffle Melbourne and his aromatic creations for the festival in Melbourne.

Now I've picked up the scent of another truffle festival near Perth thanks to Natasha Atkinson, friend and manager of Fremantle Markets. There seems to be a growing obsession with this gourmet mushroom especially in winter due to the availability of fresh black truffles.



For readers who are new to truffles, they are enjoyed for their intense and earthy fragrance. This unique scent lends a flavour and aroma to food including soup, pasta or meat that is unavailable from any other ingredients. Hence an obsession with the truffle especially among gastronomes.



The Australian Truffle Season running from June to September is helping to supply the Fremantle Markets Truffle Festival, which is into its 2nd year. Natasha shared with me that the success of year one has encouraged the Market and its partners to offer an even bigger and better festival this year.



The Festival supports Australia's emerging truffle industry and raises consumer awareness of this gourmet ingredient and its possible use in everyday cooking. The Truffle Festival is taking place on the weekend of 5 and 6 July from 9am till 5pm. Here are the reasons why we think you'll want to spend your weekend with Fremantle Markets.

Bringing you the finest Australian truffles

The Market is working with Great Southern Truffles who has been sourcing premium locally grown truffles from growers in The Great Southern Regions of Western Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania.

During the 4 month annual season from June to September, different truffiere's in towns like Manjimup, Pemberton, Bridgetown, Denmark and Albany in Western Australia, Launceston in Tasmania and the Blue Mountains and Orange in New South Wales all produce subtle flavour differences at varying times during the season. The collective aim is to bring the finest Australian truffles to you.

Long table truffle dinner

A highlight of the Festival is the lavish long table truffle dinner on the evening of the 5th Juy at $100 per person. 90 Diners will get to enjoy a fancy 5-course picnic with all the sights and aroma of truffles from 7pm – 11pm. Big is better

The success of last year's Truffle Festival and the demand from foodies and truffle lovers means a bigger event this year. The Festival will branch out into the Henderson Street Car Park to offer more stalls and variety.

The availability of truffles at the Fremantle Markets simply translates to more tastings for everyone. Special truffle dishes and products will be available from many of the stallholders like Eat Street, Jumplings, Black Cherries, Fremantle Gozleme, Allan Andersen, Cacao Creations etc. Some of the interesting treats include mushroom and truffle paella, Chinese-style lobster and truffle dumplings, truffle aioli on freshly-caught fish, popcorn with truffle salt, fresh mozzarella infused with truffle, truffles infused into Fremantle sardines, truffle-flavoured hot dogs, egg and truffle sandwiches and many more. There will also be a cooking demonstration and a series of talks to inspire visiting home cooks.
