Fremantle Prison will commemorate 30 years since its closure as a maximum-security prison on the afternoon of Monday, 8 November 2021 by giving visitors a rare chance to explore the World Heritage site and award-winning tourist destination for free.
will give visitors free public access to the Main Cell Block on the ground floor from 1.30pm to 6.00pm. The afternoon activities will begin with a traditional smoking ceremony at 1pm. There will be specialist conservation and museum staff available to engage with visitors and tell stories about the prison. Theatrical performances will be held every 15 minutes starting from 1.30pm. Bookings will not be required.
After it was decommissioned as an operating prison in November 1991, Fremantle Prison reopened as a tourist attraction only a few months later in January 1992. In the 30 years since, more than 4.4 million visitors have visited the site, where they have taken tours and learnt all about the prison's history and conservation achievements.
