Situated in the port city of Fremantle, the Western Australian Maritime Museum provides a unique opportunity to learn about WA's long relationship and history with the sea.

Home not only to Australia's 1983 winner of the America's Cup, Australia II, in the Tin Canoe to Australia II exhibit, all aspects of WA's maritime history are represented in an additional five themed galleries at the Maritime Museum..

Hooked on Fishing looks at how WA's fishing industry has changed over the years. Naval Defence explains the importance of Fremantle and the Royal Australian Navy. Want to know how the Swan River landscape has changed over the years? Check out the Swan River exhibit. The Indian Ocean exhibit describes the trade routes that have linked the people of the Indian Ocean; and finally Cargoes looks at what has been through WA's various ports and what impact this has had on WA.

The history lesson doesn't end there; visitors have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Oberon class Submarine HMAS Ovens. Departing every half hour (10am - 3.30pm) the tour takes visitors through the submarine revealing what it was like to live and serve on this undersea vessel. Please note due to steep ladders and narrow hatchways this tour is not for everyone, so check tour details and restrictions on the website.

In addition, the Maritime Museum welcomes school groups and excursions and even has facilitated programs for the different age groups. Bookings must be made in advanced.

Located at Victoria Quay, the Maritime Museum is within walking distance of the Fremantle train station. An alternative is to hop on the free Fremantle Cat Bus Service which passes regularly, simply check the timetable at the site. For those who prefer to drive, there is ample paid parking at Victoria Quay.

If you're a history buff, boat lover or just simply up to learning Transperth something about Western Australia's nautical history, then the Maritime Museum is for you.
