Melbourne offers so many amazing experiences and some of them can be quite costly, however it does not have to be so. There are many free things that you can do around Melbourne.

Whether you are on your own, with children, or as a couple you do not have to break the bank to have a holiday in Melbourne.



Film and Television
Take a visit to ACMI - the Australian Museum of Moving Images. It has a free exhibition and there are many activities to join in on as well as some paid special events from time to time. Children will enjoy experiencing the past of Australian film and television. It is located at Federation Square, Flinders Street, Melbourne.

Street art
Melbourne is famous for street art and graffiti around the world and the best place to see the street art is Hosier Lane , AC/DC Lane and Union Lane - remember to take your camera.

Remembering our Heroes
The Shrine of Remembrance is a wonderful tribute to our fallen soldiers. You can walk from the city and head towards Birdwood Avenue to find the Shrine of Remembrance.

It is a tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in World War 1. Here you can explore the legacy of war in Australia and pay your respects. You can take a free guided tour or you can walk through the Shrine by yourself.

Botanical Gardens:
Directly across from the Shrine of Remembrance is the Royal Botanic Gardens . A beautiful place to spend a pleasant afternoon walking through the gardens. There are wonderful trees, grassy areas and a lovely lake to picnic around. From time to time there are organised events and there are several cafes and restaurants scattered throughout. At the entrance near the Shrine, is a fun children's garden where they can play and explore in.

Read a book:
The State Library of Victoria is home to touring literary exhibitions, as well as permanent attractions and different shows.
Entry is free and you can you can book a free guided tour too. You will discover ancient history in one location whilst admiring the inspiring architecture in the library also.

Melbourne Museum
If you hold a concession card, the Melbourne Museum is also free. You can visit the many exhibits throughout the museum and quite easily fill in half a day here with the children.

Laneway Life:
A walk through the laneways of Melbourne is a wonderful way to experience the history of Melbourne. From the beautiful tiled floors of the laneways and arcades through to the cafe culture that has moved outdoors, now filling the laneways with cafes and restaurants. Some cafes may be relatively expensive to dine in, but walking through here is still a free experience. Sometimes some of the restaurants will even share with you samples of their food along the way.

Art Galore:
Along St Kilda Rd (South of Flinders Street Station) you will come to the National Gallery of Victoria , an amazing gallery to visit. Often the exhibits will have an entry fee, but to walk into the NGV and take a look around is completely free. Many people like to lay on their backs in the great hall and gaze up at the beautifully coloured glass ceiling.



Food Fest:
Head down to the David Jones food hall where there are often free samples put out to try their wares. You can walk from one end of the food hall to the other feasting with your eyes on many decadent delights. Even if there are no samples and you don't purchase anything, a walk through here is always interesting.

Browsing not Buying:
Continuing up you can go window shopping through Myer and David Jones, head up to the QV Centre and Emporium Shopping Centre. All of which is free as long as your eyes don't get caught on something that you simply must have.

To Market, To Market:
The Queen Victoria Market (QV) is a bustling place to visit. Many of the vendors will offer food samples and you can wander about, soaking up the atmosphere, listening to live music and perhaps enjoying some cheap street food (Check website for opening days),

Getting Around:
The City Circle Tram is now a free tram that goes right around the Melbourne CBD and is a great way to take in the whole of the city. As a visitor, you simply hop on and off where ever you wish to - no ticket required. Look for the brown City Circle Tram and the depots along the way.
