A popular family holiday spot, Kalbarri has plenty of free activities to enjoy during your stay.

1. Explore the Murchison

The Murchison River is the lifeblood of Kalbarri. You will find many people on the sand bar casting a line; while we were there, we saw a huge mulloway being caught. Families with young kids use the shallow sections as a safe swimming and paddling beach. The sand is soft and perfect for building sandcastles. Others enjoy boating, canoeing and swimming in the sheltered river while others are happy to just walk along the beach.

2. Feed the Pelicans

Every morning at 8.45am there is a public pelican feeding session down on the grassed area opposite Woods Street. Even though they are not my favourite animals (yes, their yellow eyes do scare me), it was quite an amazing sight. The tame pelicans fly in right on time and wait for their feed. The volunteer pelican feeder will then give a little talk about the pelicans and then invite kids and adults from the crowd to feed them. At the end they do pass a bucket around for those who want to make a donation. For the more daring, there are other 'tame' pelicans that hang around the local beaches that you can hand feed if you dare to get close enough.

3. See the Coastal Cliffs

The drive heading out of Kalbarri along Red Bluff Road has many turn offs leading to the coastal cliffs. They are usually situated a short walk form the car park. Standing on the platforms, listening to the waves of the Indian Ocean crash and looking out to sea, it is hard believe you are standing on the western edge of the continent of Australia.

4. Lookouts

The two main lookouts in Kalbarri are the Chinaman's Lookout and the Zuytdorp Memorial. Both lookouts give you view over the Murchison River and the Indian Ocean. Both areas are perfect for watching the sun set over the ocean.

5. Enjoy the Beaches

The locals and the many tourists that come to Kalbarri each year love the safe beaches. You can swim and surf, cast a line or spot dolphins and whales. Blue Holes is rocky and reefy fishing beach which is also good for picnics. Red Bluff and Jake's Point are excellent surfing beaches.
