It is the nation's capital and there is no other way to experience the capital city than seeing it for FREE.

The best way to get around is by car and almost all the sightings below have free parking, unless stated in the notes. So let the adventures begin at the Capital City of Australia.

1. Australian War Memorial
Where: Treloar Crescent (top of ANZAC Parade), Campbell
Times: 10am – 5pm daily – Closed Christmas Day

2. National Museum Australia
Where: Lawson Crescent, Acton Peninsula
Times: 9am – 5pm daily – Closed Christmas Day

3. Australian National Botanical Gardens
Where: Off Clunies Ross St, Acton
Times: 8:30am – 5:30pm daily - Closed Christmas Day (extended hours to 8pm on weekends in January only)
Note: Parking is available on site for $10 per day or $2.80 per hour



4. Commonwealth Park
Where: Parkes Way, Parkes
Times: Accessible 24hrs, all year round

5. Canberra Glass Works
Where: 11 Wentworth Avenue, Kingston
Times: 10am to 4pm from Wednesday to Sunday - Closed Good Friday.

6. High Court of Australia
Where: Parkes Place, Parkes
Times: Monday – Friday: 9:45am- 4:30pm & Sunday Midday to 4pm
Normal Court Sitting Hours : 10:15am to 12:45pm & 2:15pm to 4:15pm - The building is closed on public holidays



7. Lennox Gardens
Where: Flynn Dr, Yarralumla
Times: Accessible 24hrs, all year round

8. Lakeside Walk
Where: Begin the walk at Commonwealth Place
Times: Accessible 24hrs, all year round
Notes: 2km walk – approx one hour return walk, easy with some steps

9. Lake Burley Griffin
Where: Lake Burley Griffin, Acton
Times: Accessible 24hrs, all year round
Notes: Catch a cruise or ferry, rides bikes, perfect for picnics etc.

10. New Parliament House
Where: Parliament Drive, Canberra
Times: 9am-5pm, all year round expect Christmas Day
Notes: Sitting days – Monday & Tuesday from 9am, Wednesday & Thursday from 8:30am



11. Royal Australian Mint
Where: Denison Street, Deakin
Times: Monday to Friday – 8:30am – 5pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm, closed Christmas Day & Good Friday

12. National Library of Australia
Where: Parkes Place, Parkes
Times: Monday- Thursday 9am-9pm, Friday & Saturday 9am-5pm & Sunday 1:30pm-5pm

13. National Gallery of Australia
Where: Parkes Place, Parkes
Times: 10am-4pm
Notes: Special exhibitions fees apply – general admission and permanent exhibitions are free

14. National Film & Sound Archive
Where: McCoy Circuit, Acton
Times: Monday- Friday 9am – 5pm & Weekend 12pm- 5pm , closed Christmas Day



15. National Portrait Gallery
Where: King Edwards Terrance, Parkes
Times: Daily – 10am-5pm, closed Christmas Day

Times: Daily, 9-5pm closed Christmas Day & Good Friday
