Save pennies without getting bored
Adelaide is a city like no other. It's not too big to get lost and feel like a number, but not too small that it becomes boring and monotonous. What really makes Adelaide so special is the variety of things you can do - for free!
Many of us have been there trying to save every penny for one reason or another, and Adelaide makes this easy because you might be dirt poor or saving money but can still feel like a million bucks by simply trying these activities.
Bring your ID, fill in a simple form and choose your transportation for the day, go for a bike ride through the Torrens River all the way to West Beach, or take the path that runs along the tramline and go to Glenelg or Brighton. The options are endless and the bike is yours for the whole day!
Any library in any suburb in Adelaide is free. Again all you need is to bring your ID, fill in some forms and you will be ready to use your shiny new card to hire movies, books, magazines, kids toys, audio books, comics, documentaries and even tools in selected libraries.
If you are a more selective person or don't have much time to browse through shelves, then log into your online account and order the books you want, collect them from any library of your choice and return them at any library of your choice. It is a great system!
Free beaches Being able to see, play and swim in the ocean whenever we please is something we certainly take for granted. Go to your local beach for a walk, a picnic or a swim. It is not only free inspiration and relaxation but free exercise with a view!
Free walking/ bicycle trails and paths Search on the internet or take some (free) walking maps from your local library. The options are endless again! Choose from wetlands, lakes, reservoirs, national parks, conservation forests, and old railway lines. Go exploring and discover some local wildlife!
Free window shopping Most retail outlets in Australia pay their staff a wage not a commission, this makes it easier and actually possible to simply go for a wander through stores without being pressured or bullied into buying something and as long as you don't try 100 things and turn the shop upside down, most people won't mind if you are just walking by and looking, so ditch the guilt of: "Just looking".
Free ideas for your home Public safety in Adelaide means most homes don't have a 3m solid steel gate and 3 violent terriers to protect them. If your home needs a facelift and you aren't sure where to start go for a walk in your favourite suburb. I am not saying become the local peeping Tom and get a free ride home in a police car - no, simply wander around and check out front yards, facades and doors. This way, you may find it easier to visualise what your project could end up looking like before starting it.
Free hobbies Volunteering is a great way to help the community and those in need. If you have a particular hobby, you can give classes or attend a community group where you can learn something new, meet some people and work on a small or big project.
This is also a good way to ease yourself into a new job, get a little taste of what it's like, the pros / cons and what type of people work there.
Playgrounds are safe, well maintained, with barbecue areas and toilets. They are simply great spots for kids to hang out, exercise and meet other children, instead of sitting in front of the TV getting bombarded with toy advertisements and becoming socially segregated.
No need for expensive toys.
You can go in and out as many wineries as you like! Enjoy the vineyard views stretching their purple tentacles, take some pictures and enjoy a sip or two from the free wine samples. This way you might get to see more cellar doors in one day and end up with a favourite you can come back to when money is not an issue.
So pick one and do it, all you need is time and a different attitude/approach to weekends You don't have to always be buying things, going to fancy places and amassing debt to have a good time. Go do something for free instead, we are in Adelaide - where the best things in life are free!
