Now that daylight saving and the hotter weather have arrived, there's more time for outdoor activities in Adelaide. Kids and toddlers no longer want to go to bed while it's still light, so we're on the lookout for new family entertainment in the evening and on weekends.

The last weekend of October brings loads of free things to do at Youth Fest 14 , and for Halloween why not explore a haunted maze south of Adelaide ($3) or visit Adelaide Gaol for cheap family fun things to do.

On Saturday October 25 a free rally outside Fort Largs will protest the government selling the nineteenth century fort off to a housing developer. There will be a display by soldiers from sister Fort Glanville to entertain the crowd and the Wienerbago gourmet German food truck will be there to feed the hungry masses.

There are so many events on during November that I haven't been able to cover them all in this guide, but you can see more in the November listings .

Adelaide's favourite night markets return again on Sunday October 26, and they will be better than ever with even more market stalls - don't miss them.

Another of the free events in November is Semaphore's newest festival , packed with free things to do and fun activities for kids of all ages. Just south of Adelaide the free Strawberry Fair offers similar family entertainment as well as the chance to pick up some retro collectables at the white elephant stall.

Z Ward , the former asylum for the criminally insane at Glenside Hospital will be holding its only Open Day in 130 years on Sunday November until noon (free entry), but be early!

Also the same weekend is the Gawler Jazz Festival , a Family Fun Day , and Convoy for Kids - all free.

Christmas in South Australia would not be Christmas without the Christmas Pageant , possibly the most popular of all the free things to do in Adelaide. Don't miss local pageants too at Norwood and Christies Beach .

Young couples (and singles) will enjoy the new Fridays at the Art Gallery or romantic moonlight markets .

The Feast Festival has grown in popularity and broad appeal over the years, and now includes fun things to do in Adelaide, the suburbs, and some regions of South Australia. Check out the highlights here , and a different perspective here .

The ever popular Semaphore Street Fair returns at the end of November, although some motoring enthusiasts won't want to miss their Volksfest .

Cheese lovers in Adelaide will flock to Cheesefest again this year, but if you want to be more active try the Fleurieu Folk Festival - both on the last weekend of October.

There's plenty more family entertainment in November with a Halloween Roller Disco , Amy's Ride , a picnic at Marble Hill , and the Riverstock Music Festival .

For film buffs the quite spectacular Radical Reels short films at The Capri are outstanding, head to the "beach" in Adelaide's CBD for the Shorts Film Festival , or learn about moving to a more sustainable world at the Transitions Film Festival .

Adelaide kids will love Pixar in Concert and the Kapunda Rodeo , but music fans will only want to know about Bus to Big Trees and the Supanova concert .

The Gorgeous Festival allows one to be very self indulgent, but if you have it in you to help others out, do the Ride for Pain or just take a train ride to support a special SteamRanger cause .

What you eat is important to you, and growing your own food guarantees freshness and taste. On October 26 the Botanic Gardens Adelaide has the chance for children to plant a corn crop , one of their great range of activities for kids and free events. Of course you get the chance to come back later and enjoy it too.

If you'd rather plant some flavoursome crops in your own garden, then Diggers in the Botanic Gardens has heirloom gardening workshops (not free).

Many people prefer to eat well rather than plant food, and Mr Pilgrim's Cafe in Semaphore serves great food that is also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

St Kilda has many free attractions, and one of my favourites is their Mangrove Trail . It's quite a unique place to visit, and I saw several families exploring who loved their visit.

If you're at a loose end what to do in Adelaide, the Southern Rockhounds Gem and Craft Fair may surprise you - take a look and see what you think.
