The word "free" could easily be the most popular word in the English language. We all love a free ice-cream, free meal, free offers, basically anything free. One of my friends put it very aptly, "No matter how rich you get and no matter how old you get, nothing beats a freebie". So let's explore some free stuff you could find in Melbourne.
1. Free myki/metcard- Did you know that if in any given month Metro train falls behind their service delivery target of 98 per cent or doesn't meet their on-time performance target of 88 per cent, patrons can claim free daily myki/metcard? For instance, in March Metro train missed their on-time performance target. The number of trains running on time in March was 87.67 per cent which was below the 88 per cent required by the Victorian Government under the Metro's Franchise Agreement. As compensation, Metro handed out a daily metcard/daily myki. However, to be eligible for these offers you would need to be a monthly, six-monthly or yearly metcard/myki holder. So keep an eye out for such announcements in Metro website or notification boards in your local train station.
2. Free travel- Want to travel for free in trains? Why not take advantage of the "Early Bird" option? Essentially the Early Bird Metcard provides free travel for passengers scheduled to arrive at their destination by 7am. You could be saving hundreds of dollars over a year by being an Early Bird. Check out the Metro train website or visit a customer service counter at your local train station for more information. If you are in Melbourne CBD, you could choose to hop on one of the free City Circle Trams for a free ride around the city. These trams operate everyday of the week and could save you quite a bit of money on travel.
3. Free stuff - Donate blood at Red Cross and be rewarded with free foods and drinks. You would also benefit from a boost in self-esteem and could gloat over the knowledge that your single donation can give life to 3 people. Any healthy adult is eligible to donate blood. Visit their website or give them a call to make your next appointment and contribute towards a noble cause.
4. Free food- Did you know you could claim free foods and drinks on your birthday? Many franchisees and restaurants are giving away free foods and drinks on your birthday. Some of the many examples include Salsas and Sumo Salad give free burrito/salad, Baskin Robin gives free ice-cream, Boost Juice give free juice while Brumby's give a free cupcake on your birthday. You may need to become their members, which is free of charge, to acquire all these freebies. Check out their websites or visit a store to learn more about these much-loved freebies!
