Keeping chickens in the backyard always sounds like such a charming exercise. A bit of county pleasure in the big city.

Chooks help out by eating your vegetable scraps, provide the whole family with free range eggs and also make great pets.

Plus the delight for children of going out and finding an egg for their breakfast is undeniable. Such an old-fashioned childhood experience.

But of course it is a little more complicated than that. Will your chickens get on with the family cat and dog? What will you do if they are unwell? Will they attract rats and mice? Are you allowed to keep a rooster in suburbia?

The City of Stonnington has a free presentation coming up about keeping chickens in your suburban back yard.

They have invited a speaker, Fleur from Book a Chook at Spring into Gardening, to give you all the information and to answer your many questions.

You can find out about breeds and coop selection, council permits, chicken health and maintenance and in short whether chickens are for you.

The talk is on Wednesday the 9th of July at the Malvern Town Hall. You can register for this talk here.
