Are you looking for something a little different in the way of celebrating the festive season. What about a tree dressing ceremony in preparation for the summer solstice on the 22 December?

The ancient Romans, ancient Chinese, Vikings, native Americans, Mayans, Aztecs and Druids are all known to have celebrated the summer solstice or midsummer with ceremonies, festivals, burning effigies and sacrifices. In modern day Australia the interpretation seems to be one of celebrating nature in general and more specifically the longest day of the year.

From 10 am - 1pm on Sunday 7 December the Botanic Gardens at Mt Cootha is hosting a session to decorate the beautiful shaving brush tree at the entrance to the gardens near the information kiosk. Beautiful pink woollen pom poms that mimic the tree's flowers will be supplied.

Adults and children are welcome to attend and celebrate Christmas with a twist.
