Free Star Weaving Workshop and Community Day

A star! What is a star? Are they merely glistening clouds of gas in space? How about another description: they are the light in the darkness. At night time, stars in the sky have guided sailors and their ships. They are a torch that give us hope, an unwavering brightness that shows us there is light to the dark.

In the 1 million stars project , stars represent courage, solidarity and light. The project aims to collect 1 million stars to end all forms of violence, including domestic violence, racism and bullying. It began as a personal response by artist Maryann Talia Pau towards the Jill Meagher case. It has turned into a global weaving movement that seeks to remind people that there is hope in the face of adversity. That as a community, we can do something about these paralysing injustices that exist in the world.

The project aims to reach 1 million woven eight point stars for an exhibition in 2018. The Nest Community has recently become a part of the project as a Weave100 community. The Nest Community are hosting this free workshop and community to raise awareness of domestic violence and family violence. This organisation aims to provide women and children with free/low cost services, workshops and social groups. Through fostering supportive a community, the Nest Community hopes to make learning opportunities available to women and children of all backgrounds.



On the day, the Nest Commuity will launch new services which are specifically targeted to women and children who have suffered family and domestic violence. They hope to provide support, social outreach and creative opportunities. On the day, the Nest Community's volunteers/facilitators will be hosting the eight pointed star weaving workshop. It will run from 2-5pm. The workshop is open to all ages and families are welcomed. An afternoon tea of baked treats will be provided.

The non-for-profit, volunteer run organisation hopes to have the support of the wider community and local businesses in running support services and creativity workshops for free. They aim to have the wider community and local businesses purchase vouchers so that women and children who have been affected by domestic and family violence are able to attend workshops at no cost. The Nest Community are hoping to provide 100 women in the Greater Brisbane area the opportunity to be a part of the Nest Community, and free access to support and creative opportunities.

The Nest Community provide services and engaging workshops with a focus on creativity and sustainability. The craft workshops aim to build self-esteem, identity and community spirit by enabling participants to learn new skills.
