People sometimes see Perth as a bland and boring sort of place, but they couldn't be more wrong. Earlier this year I watched traditional English Morris Men dancing at the Buddha's birthday celebrations, and now I have the chance to celebrate Christmas with bellydancers at a hafla.
What's a hafla, I hear you say? The word was new to me too, but according to the
Urban Dictionary , it's a "small, low-key social gathering centred around bellydancing and food. May include costume vendors and live music." That sounds like a perfect description of the
.
The Free Spirit Dance Community (FSDC), based in South Fremantle, is a community organisation of musicians and dancers. They offer classes in bellydance, Bollywood, Tribal and Fusion dance to all ages and provide a safe and supportive place to learn and perform. They hold regular haflas with the Christmas Extravaganza also including a mini-bazaar for some all-important gift shopping.
Dancers at the hafla include the Free Spirit Gypsies, the Bollywood Crew, numerous soloists and the Arabian Night Gypsies plus many more, promising a night of festive fun with something for everyone to enjoy.
BYO rug or beanbag, picnic hamper and drinks (alcohol is OK and coffee and tea will be supplied) and get ready to enjoy an evening of colourful music and dance.
