Enjoy a unique cinema experience for free at the Southgate Cinema this summer. Reclining in a deckchair under a glass roof, you can enjoy the novelty that comes with an outdoor cinema without actually braving the elements. To passers-by, the cinema is silent; audio is relayed to each cinema-goer through headphones.
The free Southgate Cinema runs every Tuesday during the summer months.
Cheap Tuesday at the movies takes on a whole new meaning, as a free flick is shown every Tuesday evening over the warmer months. Due to the sunlight streaming in through the windowed roof, each screening takes place just after dusk.
The season kicks off on November 11 with a showing of last year's 12 Years a Slave. The historical film is based on the book of Solomon Northup, a free black man in the United States who was kidnapped and sold into slavery; as the title suggests, he endured twelve years of forced labour before being able to escape.
The program will include films for all tastes, with a selection of arthouse, popular and classic movies. View the program and book your tickets here. Note that at the time of writing, only the first three movies are listed on their website; however, the cinema will be running all summer.
Only food that has been purchased inside the Southgate complex is permitted into the cinema. You can order snacks as well as more substantial pizzas to enjoy during the film. The cinema menu from Bluetrain also includes tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages. To get the best deal on your cinema snacks, go for one of the packages, such as the $20 'Blue Class' which includes one snack, one alcoholic drink and one pizza.
Booking ahead of time is essential and you must check in for the film one hour before the showing time, or your tickets may be reallocated.
