Happy New Year Secret Listers. Can you believe this is the 56th edition of the Secret List and it is now in its 6th year?

This January, I am focussing on free events for kids and families during the school holidays.

Why is it a secret? Because if you kids find out about all the things on this list: they will beg you to do everything on it.


New Year's Day Beach Party and Fireworks
What a way to start the New Year with the first big party of the year. Head to Shelley for their annual New Year's Day Beach Party with a rocking concert, free family activities, and at 8.15pm a spectacular fireworks display.

When: Sunday 1st January, 2017 from 3.30pm, fireworks at 8.15pm

School Holiday Fun at the Art Gallery of WA
The Art Gallery of WA will be turning little discoverers into detectives as children follow the 'I Spy Trail' around the Art Gallery, learning amazing facts about the artwork in the State Art Collection. Suitable for children over six, you start your journey of discovery at the reception desk, and then stay afterwards to create your own artwork in the Imagination Room.

When: any day during the summer school holidays, 17th December to January 30th, from 10am to 5pm (closed Tuesdays)

Wildlife Petting Zoo at Fremantle Markets
Every Friday during the school holidays there will be a petting zoo with a difference at the Fremantle Markets. The amazing West Oz Wildlife petting zoo gives everyone the chance to see and touch native Australian animals such as snakes, koalas and more up close.

When: every Friday from 12noon to 2pm

The Great Valley Rally
The Great Valley Rally is car rally with a difference and will take you through the amazing attractions of the Swan Valley. Suitable for kids aged 5 to 12 and their families, the starting point is the Swan Valley Visitor Centre where you check-in and collect your map and list of clues.

Estimated to take around three hours, the rally will take you around the Swan Valley as you find Stirling the Black Swan, solve clues, learn facts and collect letters to answer the secret riddle. When you have solved the riddle head back to the Visitor Centre to collect your special certificate. Download the clue sheet here .

When: any day during the summer school holidays, last departure by noon

See the Duyfken at Elizabeth Quay
The incredible Duyfken replica has a new temporary home at Elizabeth Quay. Built in 1999 to commemorate the ship of Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog, this amazing ship will also have (paid) guided audio tours, but it is worth a visit to the Quay to admire the ship in its new home.

When: now until March 2017

Improv Comedy Workshops
If your teenager thinks they're pretty funny, why not enrol them in a free Improv Workshop supported by the YMCA and run by the Big Hoo-Haa. You may recognise names such as Tim Minchin, Claire Hooper, Sam Longley and Andrea Gibbs – they are all Big Hoo-Haa alumni, and your 12-17 year may be the next big thing!

Taught by professional performers, kids will learn a range of skills so they can start writing and performing their own comedy. Registration is essential – here . please click here. ]

Fun With Lego at the Art Gallery of WA
Lego lovers of all ages should head to the Art Gallery of WA to join in an incredible Lego event. Celebrating the new sculptures recently bought by the Gallery by internationally acclaimed artist Antony Gormley, this Lego workshop will encourage kids to make Lego sculptures using the language and shapes of buildings to describe and build human bodies. Confused? The kids won't be.

When: Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th, Friday 13th, Wednesday 18th, Thursday 19th and Friday 20th January from 10am-3pm

Extreme Water Sport Fun Day
All the family are welcome to enjoy a free day of water sports at the Extreme Water Sports Day at the new Bold Park Aquatic Centre. There will be plenty of fun and wet activities all day including an enormous inflatable slide plus plenty of prizes and giveaways.

When: Saturday 14th January, 2017 from 12noon to 4pm

Seaside Magic with the Eco Faeries
There will be two separate events where kids can meet the Eco Faeries and make their very own recycled tambourines. Shake rattle and roll!

When: Sunday 22nd and Wednesday 25th January, from 9am to 10pm

The Bubble Lab
One of the free Fringe Festival events, and all the way from the UK, Dr Erin (Air-in) Bubble has a spectacular bubble street show that has been seen by more than a million people in twenty countries. The 45 minutes shows is a unique combination of clowning, street theatre and bubble science with the highlight being the amazing Bubbleocalypse, a five meter long bubble that floats over the crowd (weather permitting).

When: Friday 27th January to Wednesday 1st February, daily at 5pm

Australia Day Beach Festival
If the kids like to wake you up early, take them down to Coogee Beach for the Australia Day Beach Festival. There will be a free sausage sizzle, a watermelon eating competition, sandcastle building, rides and games and live music and performances.

When: Thursday 26th January, 2017 from 8am-12noon
Where: Coogee Beach Reserve, Powell Rd, Coogee

Australia Day Celebration Zone and Skyworks
The Australia Day Skyshow is top of the list for free events this month, but the free fun starts even earlier with the Australia Day Celebration Zone in South Perth providing a huge range of activities for families all day. Covering more than 10 hectares along the South Perth foreshore, there will be over 100 free activities for all members of the family from toddlers to adults.

Across the river in Langley Park there will be even more ways to have fun with a water playground, carnival rides, petting zoo, international food market and Rotary sausage sizzle. Visible from both sides will be an aerial show and a huge regatta on the river.

Of course, the main event the 2017 Australia Day Skyshow will start at 8pm with great views from Kings Park, the city foreshore and South Perth foreshore.

Australia Day in Armadale
If battling the enormous crowds can be too much but you still want to see some fireworks, head to the celebrations in Armadale with an easy evening of family friendly festivities. There will be a water park and carnival rides, a food market and plenty of live music before the fireworks display.

When: Thursday 26th January, 2017 from 5pm-9pm

Teacup – at Fringe World
This is a special performance at the Fringe World Festival, which sees an award winning picture book about the human spirit, beauty and high adventure being translated into movement and music. The story of a boy who must leave his home and find another, the shows will run for about 40 minutes and are suitable for all ages.

When: Friday 27th (2.30pm) January, Saturday 28th (10.30am, 1pm, 2.30pm) and Sunday 29th January (10.30am, 1pm, 2.30pm)

Chinese New Year Festival
Everyone will love the colours and sights of the Chinese New Year Festival. Get the kids into costume at the Chinese costume photo booth or let them play games, rides and water slides. Eat delicious food, watch the lion dances, Chinese folk dancers and martial arts.
