Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan announced on 8 December 2015 that public transport will be free across Victoria on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Trains, trams, buses and regional town buses will be free all day Christmas Day.
Public transport will be free for all from 6pm on 31 December 2015. Trains, trams, buses and regional town buses will be free of charge on New Year's Eve after 6pm until the first scheduled service on New Year's Day. Metropolitan public transport will run all night.
Further, V/Line travel will be free to all regional destinations where the myki touch on takes place after 6pm on 31 December 2015. The first V/Line service departing Melbourne on New Year's Day will be free as well.
There is no need to touch on your myki on Christmas Day (all day) and New Year's Eve (after 6pm). All the ticket barriers in all the Metropolitan railways stations will be open in these timeframes. Even if you accidentally touch on your myki during these times you will not be charged. If you touch on before 6pm remember to touch off afterwards to avoid getting charged default fares.
