About pickleball

Pickleball is probably best described as a cross between tennis and table tennis.

The game is played with a ‘paddle’ instead of a racket or bat and wiffle ball (a hollow plastic ball with holes in it).

Pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors, but the Ultimo class is indoors.

About the classes

Free pickleball classes have recently started up at Ultimo Community Centre. They are run by the RALLY4EVER charity, which is better known for free tennis lessons aimed at improving physical and mental wellbeing and social connection. However, they are now starting to introduce pickleball classes as well.

The classes are proving to be very popular and about twenty people attend each week.

The classes are run by RALLY4EVER founder and CEO, former professional tennis player Louise Pleming, who is assisted by Paul and Jay, who run the program if Louise is away on other duties.

The classes take place every Thursday from 11:30am to 1pm. There is free tea and coffee afterwards for those interested.

The class may be broken down into half an hour of practice and then half an hour of matches for example.

Who can attend?

RALLY4EVER welcomes everyone. No questions are asked and anyone can take part. People come from all walks of life and adults of all ages join in, from young people in their late teens or early twenties to the elderly up to about eighty years old. It is particularly suitable for beginners or those with limited experience, although many taking part quickly become pretty good through practice by regularly attending the classes. New people attend all the time.

What should I bring?

Pickleball ‘paddles’ as they are known are provided, but you can use your own if you prefer.

You may wish to bring a bottle of water, but as it's inside, you will be out of the elements and it isn’t too strenuous anyway.

Try to wear suitable clothing such as a t-shirt and sports shorts or tracksuit trousers and trainers.
