As part of the Head On Photo Festival , Melbourne photographer Andrew Babarczy's exhibition 'Street Portraits' is on display at the Testing Grounds * from Saturday 17th May to Sunday 8th June.


Street Portraits is an ongoing project that began in 2010. The subjects in Andrew's exhibition are strangers he met just moments before he took their photo. The exhibition aims to 'celebrate the individuality and eclecticism of the people Babarczy sees on Melbourne's streets'.

As Andrew puts it, "Every person I have captured in 'Street Portraits' is a stranger I have literally met just minutes before taking their photo. The whole interaction normally lasts only a minute or two, and it is this anonymity which results in an unguarded honesty. This style of portraiture allows you to share the creative process with the subjects – it is a great equaliser and I continue to learn so much from photographing these complete strangers."


Andrew Babarczy has strong credentials as a photographer, particularly in the area of portraiture. He has worked as a freelance photographer since 2008, and his commercial work has been commissioned by various Australian publications including Rolling Stone, Good Weekend, Sunday Life and Grazia. His artistic practice has seen him named as finalists in both The National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 and the Bowness Photography Prize 2013.

Street Portraits is Andrew's first solo exhibition.


In addition to the works being exhibited in the gallery the images will be projected outdoors as a slideshow. Andrew will also hold an artist talk on location on Friday, May 30th at 7pm.
