Having spent the last few years living abroad I now wish to rediscover my home city of Sydney to keep that 'travelling feeling' and share my findings with those that might want a bit of inspiration.

Fancy a cheap date? Take them to the cinema - free
Outdoor cinema has taken Sydney by storm – and why wouldn't it with balmy summer evenings upon us! A film, light breeze, ice-cold glass of vino what's not to love. Unfortunately the majority of of Sydney's outdoor films come with a considerable price-tag and sell out quickly. However if you're happy to travel outside of the CBD or mix-it up with bar choices, there are multiple venues that are also offering sunset screenings without requiring your wallet.

The Beresford Hotel in Surry Hills is screening retro film classics every Monday night until March. Entry is absolutely free so if you feel like revisiting some old favourites head on down, grab a nice cold drink at the bar and settle in on the rooftop for a retro revival. Films include Casablanca, Jaws and Guys & Dolls.
West Sydney - Homebush; Every evening between January 2 and January 13;
Sydney Olympic Park is rolling out the welcome for families to congregate, relax and enjoy some heart-warming films under the stars at Cathy Freeman Park (food and drink available for purchase or you can buy your own). The film selection is modern and includes such blockbusters as The Avengers & The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Details on how to reach the park can be found here.
North-Shore Chatswood Concourse;
Every Saturday afternoon until the 12th of January in the new Chatswood Concourse, the Urban Screen will be screening free showing of animation favourites for the whole family. With local dining options on your doorstep, you can indulge your tastebuds as you relax each weekend from 3pm. The list of films can be found here.
Hornsby, Berowra, Asquith & Epping; On Saturdays throughout February 2013, Hornsby Council will be hosting family movies under the stars with some fantastic retro classics. Strictly 'family friendly' i.e. no alcohol - pack your picnic, your mosquito repellent and a pillow or two and remember your inner child as you relive these classics in the twilight air.
Tropfest 2013 will be held in the Sydney Domain on Sunday February 17. Grab your snacks, picnic rug and mates then head on down to one of Sydney's most utilised outdoor spaces for a long evening of short films. This is a global event with many countries and amateur film producers participating and is a great way to keep abreast of the new faces as they break into the industry.
So don't let a Christmas strain on your wallet dissuade you from taking a love of films seriously this summer.
Get outside, get amongst the people and enjoy living it up for free in this fantastic city of ours!
