Got children 8 years and under? Then Out of the Box Festival is for you.
This festival for children is designed for kids 8 years and under and their big imaginations. Presented by Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), the Festival promotes participation in creative and imaginative play. It also gives children the confidence to get up and voice their opinions and share their stories.
The program for 2014 is an incredible one with a whole heap of events and activities suitable for all kinds of kids (and adults too). There are also lots of free events on offer so make sure you don't miss them.
The Festival runs from Wednesday 25 June to Wednesday 2 July. Some events have limited numbers so make sure you check the Out of the Box Festival website to see if booking is required.
Make your own alphabet creature at Alphabet Beasts and Creatures for the ABC Book. Have fun with paint at Where the Wild Things Paint. Or Take a journey through Asia at Under-age Stage Asia! and discover the culture via songs, dance and interactive programs.
Prepare to move and grove at Bollywood Dancing led by Dance Masala. Here, you'll learn some new steps to tear up the dance floor at the next disco.
Head to the Gong Garden to hear beautiful gongs and singing bowls. Explore the sounds, discover these intriguing instruments and have a play.
Learn about use of henna in the Indian culture at Henna Hands and understand how this tradition is significant.
Enjoy a bit of drumming fun at Japanese Drumming with taiko drums and let loose your creativity.
Children of all ages will also love Jemima Wyman's exhibition Pattern Bandits at Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). After all, who's not attracted to bright coloured things? Enter the world of patterns and participate in fantastic hands-on and interactive activities.
Visit Letters Alive at the State Library Studio and take a look at the interactive alphabet exhibition from A to Z. While you're there, pop by P is for Play! and discover the world of letters and words.
Want to play outdoors? Then Playbox is perfect! Let your imagination run wild, be inventive and have a great time playing with costumes, props and objects.
Who doesn't love a great story? The Courier-Mail Story Space gives you the opportunity to hear fabulous stories. And if you have a tale to tell, then take the seat and share your story.
Got a wish? Then make sure you write or draw it and tie it in The Wishing Tree. All you have to do after that is wait for it to come true.
18 Months - 4 Years
The Toddler Program at GOMA is a popular program for kids between 18 months and 4 years of age. These sessions are fun, education and absolutely brilliant. As part of the Festival, the program takes a look at various themes such as animals, monsters, creatures, and friends.
5 - 8 Years
Join professional illustrators and wordsmiths at Illustration and Alliteration Workshop. Your beautiful designs may even appear in State Library Queensland's ABC book!
And have a play with letters at Typography Design Workshop. Help the experts in the creation of a new font for the ABC book.
3 - 8 Years
The Monster Hotel is for children between 3 and 8 years old. Take advantage of this playspace and create an artwork to add to the installation.
Oh yes, there is something here for adults too! Adults are invited to Russell Granet's Out of the Box Keynote Address. This free session will focus on the idea of imaginative learning followed by a Q & A Session.
