Six Free October Events in Melbourne

Posted 2012-10-05 by Geraldine Masseyfollow

Back in Alfred Lord Tennyson's day in the spring a young man's fancy turned to thoughts of love. It's more likely these days, that emerging from the winter, thoughts will turn to entertainment, especially out and about in the sunshine and fresh air. I've dug up some more free events that will satisfy any young man's, well anyone's really, cravings for entertainment that won't break the bank.

[SECTION]Foxtel Festival Hub @ Melbourne Festival[/SECTION]

#article3951 ">The Foxtel Festival Hub will be THE place to be for the duration of the Melbourne Festival . With the help of Strut and Fret Production House organisers have created a funky space to crown the festival precinct. Let's face it, any uber chic modern festival needs a cool place for people to dance, drink, be entertained and generally just hang out absorbing that festival vibe.

The Hub will be presenting free and ticketed events in a range of genres and will also do duty as a cafe and garden kitchen.

When: From 11 to 27 October from 7am until late.
Where: On the Yarra banks under Princes Bridge.
What's On: Free events include Hubbaballo (the opening night party). Monday Mash Up (a performance lucky dip), sparkling surf music by Going Swimming, and the Bollywood cool of Bombay Royale.
More Information: Check the website here for the program of Festival Hub happenings.

[SECTION]Carlton Italian Festa[/SECTION]

Everybody loves Italy and all things Italian. Italians have given us spaghetti bolognese, Leonardo Da Vinci, Ferraris, ice cream cones and pianos, along with Mussolini and the Mafia. Okay, so we love most things Italian. All the good stuff will be on display at the Carlton Italian Festa on Sunday 14 October, including entertainment, food, cars and sports stars. There'll even be Angolo dei bambini (a kids corner, for those of you who don't understand Italian) with Italian cartoons and face painting Italian style.

When: Sunday 14 October.

[SECTION]Destroyed Word[/SECTION]

For the Melbourne Festival "subversive and political" Spanish artist Santiago Serra has come to Melbourne for the culmination of his 2 year art(?) project, Destroyed Word . For 2 years he's been building things in the shape of giant letters and then knocking them down in some spectacular way. The countries to have so far benefited from this artistic vision include Sweden, New Zealand, France, Iceland and Papua New Guinea.

I'm not quite sure how any of this qualifies as art but if you're curious you can get along to the ACCA Cultural Forecourt and see the mystery revealed (what word will all the letters create?), and watch the tenth letter through its creation, construction and ultimate conflagration. And if that's not enough, you'll then be able to see the subsequent exhibition of all the "dramatic obliterations" that have been captured on film. Think wrecking balls and excavators and you'll have the picture.

When: Wednesday 10 October at 8.15pm,
Where: Australian Centre for Contemporary Art Forecourt

When: From Wednesday 17 to Sunday 28 October (closed Tuesdays) from 10am to 5pm.
Where: Level 3, NGV International

More Information: See the website here .
