There are all sorts of free music on offer during the Brisbane Festival from Saturday 7 to Saturday 28 September 2013. Whether you're classical music fanatic or a pop fan, I'm certain you'll find something that might just tickle your fancy. Check out the list below:

1. Opening Day Concert

Gather your family, bring your picnic blanket and plonk down on the grass to celebrate the beginning of Brisbane Festival. Relax by the Brisbane River, savour lively indigenous performances and enjoy excellent live music on Saturday 7 September from 5pm. Be at the South Bank Cultural Forecourt for this spectacular concert.

2. TaikoDeck

Let your auditory senses be amazed by the sounds of percussion instruments including taiko drums, bells, gongs and cymbals. If you think percussion instruments are just about banging and shaking, then think again because this show will be just as visually stunning as any other performances. Don't miss this family friendly event because there is only one show on Tuesday 24 September at 12pm at Brisbane City Hall.

3. Symphony Under the Stars

Bring a picnic blanket, pack your picnic basket with goodies and make your way to Riverstage at the City Botanical Gardens on Friday 20 September. Starting at 7pm, this ever so popular family event will be featuring well-known classical pieces as well as the world premiere of An Australian in New York by the renowned Australian composer Sean O'Boyle.

4. Opera on the Riverstage

Opera lovers you're in luck. Don't miss out on this passionate performance celebrating the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's birth on Saturday 21 September at 7pm. Pack your picnic and head to Brisbane's Riverstage for this unforgettable performance.

5. QUT Sessions

For a casual Saturday afternoon of groovy entertainment, head to The Spiegeltent at South Bank's Cultural Forecourt and see the talented emerging musicians on Saturday 14 and Saturday 21 September from 2pm.

6. Fairweather

Brisbane-based composer Erik Griswold, author Rodney Hall and artist Glen Henderson collaborate to present the multifaceted life of the greatest Australian painter Ian Fairweather. Through music, text and image, you'll be presented with the artist's journey as a World War I soldier, a traveller trekking throughout the Asia-Pacific and an adventurer on a home-made raft to Timor, as well as his life in a shabby shack on Bribie Island. There is only one show on Tuesday 10 September at 12 noon at the Brisbane City Hall.
