Many of us enjoy going to the movies. You should check out this list before planning your next movie schedule. There are art films, classics, documentaries and even movies just for the kids. There is no lack of movies to keep your eyes glued to the big screen for the rest of the year. Best of all, they are FREE.

[SECTION]26 August - 1911 / Xinhai Revolution[/SECTION]



The China Cultural Centre in Sydney is hosting a free movie screening of a 2011 Chinese historical drama film based on the Xinhai Revolution or The 1911 Revolution. The story revolves around the founding of the Republic of China when nationalist forces led by Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Produced, directed and starring Jackie Chan, the film was a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution, and was selected to open the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival. It stars a stellar cast of Chinese artistes including Jaycee Chan, Li Bingbing, Winston Chao, Joan Chen and Hu Ge. The China Cultural Centre is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of understanding and appreciation for Chinese culture and the arts through educational and cultural activities. [SECTION]26 August - A Gun in Each Hand [/SECTION]



Instituto Cervantes Sydney is hosting a Spanish film entitled A Gun in Each Hand (Una pistola en cada mano). It is non-profit organization founded by the Government of Spain to promote Spanish language teaching and foster knowledge of the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world. Directed by Goya-wining Cesc Gay, this comedy revolves around the lives of eight seemingly unconnected men, each stumbling through life and trying to find their way in the workplace and in love. The cast includes prominent and highly talented Spanish and Latin American actors and actresses, including Ricardo Darín, Javier Cámara, Leonor Watling, Luis Tosar and Leonardo Sbaraglia. [SECTION]3 September - The Strangest Stranger[/SECTION]



The Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF) and the Swedish Film Institute present the curated screening of an art film directed by Magnus Bärtås. The Strangest Stranger is based on the story of Tokyo-based art impresario Joni Waka & Kafka. He is a Jewish man in Tokyo who constantly presents his biography to people he randomly meets in the streets or at social events. Refreshments are available and Dr Gene Sherman from SCAF will give an introductory talk before the screening. SCAF is a philanthropic enterprise dedicated to providing an innovative forum for contemporary art and presenting work by internationally renowned visual practitioners primarily from Australia , the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. [SECTION]11 September - Joy House Film Festival[/SECTION]



The Joy House Film Festival provides a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their stories of joy and diversity. It serves up a great selection of short films, including drama, documentary, drama-comedy, animation, stop animation and action films. Prizes include Best Film, Best Women in Theatre & on Screen (WITS) Film, Hoyts People's Choice and Best Diversity Film. Head over to Hoyts to get your dose of happy films. This classic masterpiece is one of the world's most highly rates movies. It is the work of Orson Welles, actor, producer, writer, director and genius. The story revolves around publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane and the effort by news reporters to discover the meaning of his last dying words. The film premièred in New York in 1941 to controversy because it appeared to fictionalize certain events in the life of William Randolph Hearst, a powerful newspaper magnate and publisher. Rated G. [SECTION]26 September - The Nightingale[/SECTION]



Ashfield Council is hosting a screening of Chinese film 'The Nightingale'. Suitable for families, this heart-warming story is centred on the relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter. It reflects family life in modern day China where families are challenged by disconnection as parents are busy with careers and children are endeared to iPads and television. Marrickville Library is hosting a special screening for 5 to12 year olds. Children can enjoy the original 1979 version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Popcorn and drinks are also provided and the best dressed child as a Willy Wonka character can stand to win some prizes. Stanmore Library is hosting a movie screening of 'Matilda' for 5 to 12 year olds. It is based on the novel by Roald Dahl and is the author's last long children's book. The 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito revolves around a highly intelligent young girl who loves reading and discovers she can control things with her mind. Unfortunately her life is a rocky road due to disapproving parents and a terrifying school headmistress. She gets help from her supportive teacher along the way. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

Mosman Council invites you to join them in a outdoor cinema in support of Mental Health Month. You and your family can enjoy a screening of Project Wild Thing in the Village Green Mosman. This documentary by Filmmaker David Bond focuses on getting more kids (and their parents) outside and reconnecting with nature instead of being glued to the television and ipad. This assists in child development and supports mental health. Co- written and directed by Billy Wilder, this movie revolves around a family man in New York who is tempted by a beautiful neighbour while his family is away on summer vacation in Maine. [SECTION]31 October - A Touch of Spice[/SECTION]



'A Touch of Spice' is a reflection of Greek filmmaker Tassos Boulmetis' own life. The story revolves around a young boy who grows up in Istanbul with his grandfather who owns a spice shop. He and his family are deported from Turkey back to Greece where he struggles to fit into Greek society. This 2010 British biographical drama film tells the story of King George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II and his struggle to find his voice. He reluctantly assumes the throne after his brother abdicates. Unfortunately he is plagued by a speech stammer that affects his ascension. This 1954 American musical romantic comedy film stars actors Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney and the great Hollywood costume designer Edith Head. The story revolves around a song and dance team and a sister act. They try to save the failing Vermont Inn and become romantically involved in the process.
