Five Free May Events in Melbourne

Give your credit card a rest this month and get out and about in awesome autumn. Melbourne is hosting a range of events that are fun, fabulous and absolutely free. You can dance, exercise, eat, support fair trade and get techy, all while basking in the warm inner glow that comes from getting something for nothing.

First Friday Dance Club

The City of Melbourne Arts and Participation program's long-awaited and much talked about First Friday Dance Club makes its debut in May. Queensbridge Square will come alive on the first Friday of each month (weather permitting) to the sounds of rock, jazz, blues, folk, pop, urban - well, any kind of dance. It will be a different genre each month. Grab some friends or make some new ones. It's for the whole family and it's free.

When: Friday 4 May from 6pm to 8pm
Where: Queensbridge Square, 1A Queens Bridge Street, Southbank.
What's On: Let's swing. Swing dancing is the genre for May. Have dance lessons with community dance groups, see dance performances and swing, hop and boogie to your heart's content.

Active Melbourne Family Day

The Active Melbourne Family Day encourages the whole family to get active and enjoy the great Melbourne outdoors and its many sporting and recreational pursuits. Learn and develop skills and have fun on the jumping castles and in the sumo suits. All equipment and coaches are provided.

When: Sunday 6 May from 11am to 4pm.
Where: Boathouse Drive, Alexandra Gardens, St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
What's On: Clinics, training sessions and drills in a range of sports such as golf, cycling, aussie rules, lacrosse, futsal, BMX and volleyball.

Victorian Fair Trade Festival

The Victorian Fair Trade Festival presents a number of free public events as part of Fair Trade Fortnight which runs from 5 to 20 May 2012.

When: Friday 11 May to Friday 18 May
Where: Various venues around Melbourne
What's On:
Fair Trade Markets - Friday 11 May (11am to 9pm), Atrium at Federation Square.
Fairly Arty Exhibition - Friday 11 May (11am to 8pm), Urban Garden Amphitheatre at Federation Square.
Let's Talk - Friday 11 May (11am to 8pm), BMW Edge - Federation Square.
Fair Trade Play - Sunday 13 May(10am to 4pm) - City Square Melbourne.
The Big Fair Trade Morning Break - Friday 18 May (7am to 11am) - NAB Forecourt, Harbour Esplanade, Docklands.

Great Trentham Spud Festival

The Great Trentham Spud Festival pays homage to the glories of the humble spud and the town's potato farming heritage. Find out how many ways you can have fun with potatoes and enjoy the festivities. Children can even have their faces painted by 2012 Archibald Prize finalist, Rose Wilson. Now that should create some talk around the sand pit.

When: Saturday 19 May.
Where: Trentham (one hour north-west of Melbourne at the edge of the Wombat State Forest).
What's On: A farmers market, children's entertainment, live music, food and wine stalls and historical displays.

The Digital Show 2012

Tech Heads rejoice. Run by the Imaging and Digital Entertainment Association, The Digital Show demonstrates the latest in digital and imaging technology such as cameras, mobile and home entertainment products.

When: From Friday 25 May to Sunday 27 May (10am to 5pm).
NB. Friday is for business visitors only. Saturday and Sunday are open to the general public.
