For those of us fortunate enough to live in Brisbane, May is a treat. Those perfect autumn days, cooler evenings and crisper mornings entice you into the great outdoors for some recreation and revelry. May in Brisbane is bursting with festivals and entertainment so I've compiled some of the best of the freebie fun for your enjoyment. May the festivals be with you.

[SECTION]Bands in Parks featuring Jessica Mauboy: 5 May[/SECTION]

The Bands in Parks series is one of the many events offering free, live music in Brisbane . It's part of Brisbane City Council's LIVE Program and offers performances by a range of top class bands in parks throughout the Brisbane area. As a special highlight this May, popular songstress Jessica Mauboy will be headlining for one free concert. The show will be opened by the excellent Brisbane Excelsior brass band .


When: Sunday 5 May from 2pm to 5pm

[SECTION]Pine Rivers Festival: 18 to 26 May[/SECTION]

The annual Pine Rivers Festival packs a huge entertainment punch with a number of free events and activities over nine days in May.The focus is on family entertainment and most of it is free. From the food, fun and fireworks of the opening event, Hills Carnivale , to the greased- up, revved-up, retro experience of Rodz, Rock 'n' Roll you'll find something for every member of the family.


When: From Saturday 18 May to Sunday 26 May 2013. Hills Carnivale is on Saturday 18 May from 12 noon to 6pm. Rodz, Rock 'n' Roll is on Saturday 26 May from 11am to 9pm.

[SECTION]Romeo and Juliet @ Anywhere Theatre Festival: 10 and 11 May[/SECTION]

The third annual Anywhere Theatre Festival brings you exciting performances in a range of genres in surprising places. You could be watching drama in a private house, taking a theatrical walking tour of the city or watching circus in the dark. The festival has a number of free, or almost free productions, so if you're up for something completely different that won't break your budget check their free productions here. My pick of the free productions is Romeo and Juliet performed by the talented people at the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts. You'll need to get in fast because places are going quickly.


When: The festival runs from Wednesday 8 to Sunday19 May. Performances of Romeo and Juliet are on on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May at 7.30pm

[SECTION]Buddha Birthday Festival: 3 to 5 May[/SECTION]

South Bank is the venues for this year's Buddha Birthday Festival . There will be free cultural performances and demonstrations, the Vegetarian Food and Fun Fair, a garden display, dragon boat racing, children's rides and wandering entertainment and musical performances. The festival finishes with a bang with a fireworks display on Sunday evening.


When: From Friday 3 May to Sunday 5 May from 9am to 9pm.
Where: Various South Bank venues including the Piazza and Cultural Forecourt.

[SECTION]Mayes in May: 5 May[/SECTION]

Logan's historic Mayes Cottage is on display in all its heritage glory at the annual Mayes in May event. The cottage is a colonial house museum open for tours throughout the year but at its open day you can really see what life was like for Logan's early pioneers. You can watch the pig races, sheep shearing and see displays of blacksmithing and vintage cars. There will also be pony rides for the kids, country music entertainment and a sausage sizzle.


When: Sunday 5 May from 10am to 2pm.
Where: Mayes Cottage, 20 Mawarra St, Kingston.
