There's no reason to let the winter blues get you down when Melbourne is jam-packed full of free entertainment this July. You can read about some of the more celebrated winter events in these Weekend Notes articles - Docklands Winter Fireworks and Open House Melbourne . But read on to find how to keep your cold, hard cash in your wallet along with your credit cards, while you soak up five free events from the worlds of art, multicultural celebrations, science, light displays and literature.
[SECTION]Fresh Science in the Pub[/SECTION]

Science and pubs may seem like unlikely bedfellows, but a stimulating discussion about scientific concepts over a pint or a shared bottle sounds like an interesting event to me. Fresh Science has been searching the country for top early-career scientists and now 12 of Australia's brightest are coming to Melbourne to share their stories of discovery. Thankfully they don't subscibe to the popular view of science. They eschew the lecture hall in favour of the local and they're not averse to innovative presentation strategies like interpretive dance and rhyming.

Where: Upstairs at the Duke of Kent, 293 La Trobe Street, Melbourne.
