There are few free activities that are more fulfilling - both to the psyche and the body - than gardening. A well-tended vegetable garden is an ongoing source of nutrition for you and your family, allowing you to save money on food and encouraging you to spend a healthy amount of time outdoors.

Sponsored by the Campbelltown City Council, the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living is offering a number of free workshops that will provide participants with valuable skills needed to keep a home garden thriving - especially through the winter months. The workshops cover specific practical areas of home gardening and food preparation.

Preparing for a Winter Vegetable Garden

Saturday 16th May 1pm - 3pm

Just because the weather is getting colder doesn't mean you can't have a thriving garden. However, there are some important tips for making your winter garden a success - from ensuring plants get enough sunlight, to which crops to plant when.
Garden to Table Microwave Cooking

Saturday 16th May 1pm - 4pm

Having a home garden can contribute to a great degree to the health of your family. However, in order for this to be the case, you need to know how to take food from the garden to the kitchen and prepare it in a quick and healthy way.

No Dig Gardens and Mulching

Saturday 16th May 10am - 12pm

No dig gardens are an effective method of preparing space for gardening without much of the heavy digging that goes into preparing a conventional garden bed. This form of garden is particularly suitable for areas with poor soils as it relies on introduced organic matter to provide an enriched bed for plant growth.

Mulching is another great way of introducing nutrients to your garden and doubles as a water saver because of its ability to encourage water retention.
Feeding Your Family From Your Backyard

Saturday 13th June 10am - 12pm

There's nothing like the nutrient value and flavour of vegetables fresh from your garden. It is possible, with some careful planning and smart gardening practices, to grow most - if not all - of your family's vegetables in your backyard.
Garden To Table - Slow Food Cooking

Saturday 13th June 1pm - 4pm

Arm yourself with the knowledge you need to utilize the produce from your garden. Slow Cooking is a popular and simple winter cooking method.
Using Herbs and Edible Weeds from Your Garden

Saturday 13th June 1pm - 3pm

We underestimate the value of some garden plants. Sometimes because we don't know how to prepare them, other times it's a matter of not being aware of which plants are edible. Many nutritious plants seem like weeds, but should really end up on our plates. Knowing how to identify these is the first step.
Worm Farming and Composting

Saturday 11th July 10am - 12pm

Worm farming and composing are both effective methods of dealing with organic waste produced in the home. Either of these methods - or a combination of both - can provide natural homemade soil enrichment for your home gardens, and save you money on purchased fertilizers.

Garden To Table Preserving

Saturday 11th July 1pm - 4pm

With the common practices of chilling and freezing and the prevalence of pre-prepared convenience food, knowledge of other preservation methods is not common. Despite this, there are many simple preservation techniques available to ensure you can get the most use out of your harvest.
