Broke Brisbanites are spoiled for choice when it comes to free things to do. We've got Southbank, the Cultural Centre, hikes galore, and many, manymore. But if you want to get off the tourist track and see some of the hidden gems the River City has to offer, we've compiled a list of locations for every day of the week. For free day trips, something to entertain the kids, or even a fun date venue, check out the following activities.
Free pool @ Archive Beer Boutique, 100 Boundary Street, West End
The West End bar is well known for its impressive craft beer selection, but not many people know that patrons can access the pool tables for free all day on Monday. Now that the secret's out, you'll want to get in early to grab your table.
Level up – recharge with a $10 cheeseburger between 11:30am – 3pm
English classes @ Brisbane City (Suite 110/180 Queen Street) and Sunnybank (Suite 3/409 Mains Road, Macgregor)
Bonjour, ni hao, konichiwa, hola! Non-native speakers can improve their oral and written English skills on Tuesdays and Thursdays nights, with free classes in Brisbane City and Sunnybank. Bookings are not required.
Wednesday Afternoon Go Sailing (WAGS) @ Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, 578 Royal Esplanade, Manly
You don't need to be a one-percenter to experience the wind in your hair out on the water. Every Wednesday afternoon, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron offers newcomers an introduction to the sport, with the first three sessions free.
Level up – purchase any meal from the RQYS bistro to receive $1 natural oysters
Southbank Kids Collective @ Southbank Parklands
A variety of sports, music, and art activities are available from 9am – 1pm. Bookings aren't required, and with classes being reset regularly during the session, families can come and go as they please.
Shake off the woes of the week with Latin dancing. At Latin Friday Night, you can watch the professionals do their thing from 7pm, or shake your groove thing at a free lesson from 8pm. Check out the Facebook page to stay updated.
Tai Chi and Meditation @ Bodhi Chan Meditation Centre, 223 Dennis Road, Springwood
A hidden rainforest oasis in Brisbane's west, Bodhi Chan Meditation Centre is the perfect place for calm reflection. In keeping with their Buddhist principals, Bodhi Chan offers classes for free or a voluntary donation.
Level up - book into a DIY or planned retreat, staring at $30 including lunch
Livewired @ Brisbane Powerhouse, 119 Lamington Street, New Farm
The best things in life are free, and laughter is no exception. Previously known as Knockoff, Livewired hosts three comedy sets each week at the Brisbane Powerhouse. It starts at 5pm but we recommend getting there earlier to grab a good seat.
Level up – grab a bottle of rose and antipasto share platter from Mary Mae's for $60
City Hopper, various destinations along the Brisbane River
When you take a trip on a Brisbane City Council river ferry, the journey is just as good as the destination. The good news for the cash strapped is that the CityHopper is free. Look for the red ferry between 6am and midnight, seven days a week.
Daisy Hill, Daisy Hill Road, Daisy Hill
Only 30 kilometres from the CBD, Daisy Hill Conservation Park is almost 500 hectares of bushland housing native wildlife. Check out the animals, take a hike, or make use of the barbeque facilities, all for free.
