This year is the 20th anniversary of the formation of the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park, a small group who have been working hard to maintain and restore the native vegetation in the park including rare and endangered plant species. They are celebrating this milestone with a free Family Fun Day on Sunday, September 29 from 11am-3pm.

Shepherds Hill Recreation Park is located in Eden Hills south of Adelaide, and is hugely popular for the wide range of outdoor activities that it supports. It is bordered by Ayliffes Road and adjacent to the National Trust's Watiparinga Reserve . This makes it very accessible to the large number of bushwalkers and mountain bike riders of all ages who come to enjoy the shared use trails and natural bush setting every day of the year.

Other groups use the Shepherds Hill reserve including the Marion Riding Club with their horse riding and an Archery Club, but they aren't taking part in the free Family Fun Day in the park.

The day's activities kick off at 11am with free games, a treasure hunt, and craft activities for kids (accompanied by an adult) making things with feathers and leaves. Bring a picnic table and chairs or a rug, and pack the children's bikes for further adventuring on the many trails in the park. You'll need to bring your own food and drinks, but BBQs will be supplied for your BYO cooking and picnic.

At both 11.30am and 1.30pm the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park are holding two free hour-long guided walks. You'll learn about the history of the park on both, and what has been achieved in the Friends' first 20 years. One walk will be an easy grade, while those who take the more difficult walk will be rewarded by seeing a larger range of spring wildflowers. There'll also be opportunities to spot the abundant bird and wildlife in Shepherds Hill Recreation Park, including koalas and the Tawny Frogmouth if you're lucky.

Enjoy your lunch to a background of free live ukulele music, browse a before/after photo display showing the Friends' achievements, and watch the presentation of certificates to original group members at 1pm. Take the opportunity for some nature play activities for kids exploring along the creeks, and enjoy some spectacular views to the coast from the high points of the park.

The Family Fun Day is being held on Sunday, September 29 from 11am-3pm. Enter the Shepherds Hill Recreation Park via the car park on Ayliffes Road and follow the signs to where car parking, BBQs and toilet facilities will be available. For more information about the day contact the Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park on Facebook or through their website .
