In spring, the National Rhododendron Gardens are clad in the soft-lush-pink blooms for which they are so rightly famous.

But Autumn is another blooming good time to visit. The soft pinks are replaced with bursts of riotous colours -- the strong tones of maples, cherry trees, and azaleas.

It is also the season when these magnificent gardens hold their annual Free Family Fun Day. It is enough just to walk around these stunning gardens with the views overlooking Silvan Reservoir, the Yarra Valley, Warburton Ranges and Mount Baw Baw.

But because it is a special family fun day, there will also be lots of entertainment going on including circus acts, a wildlife show and a Scout ropes course. Plus hands on activities, including an Amazing Race.

You could pack a picnic if the weather is nice. There are also a number of pavilions to eat under.

The kids will enjoy the freedom of so much space.

If you enjoy walking there is around 5km of tracks or shorter strolls are available. You may spot some of the many birds and animals that call these beautiful gardens home. Look out for parrots, lyrebirds, ducks and rosellas.

This is a great opportunity for children to be in the healthy outdoors and to learn more about nature. Thank you Parks Victoria for holding such a great event so families can get outside for a play.

There is a good activity sheet here.
