The Atlantic City boardwalk stretches along the coastline like some kind of adult-oriented funtown. The first boardwalk in the United States, this road paved with wood flashes with the lights of nearby casinos and arcades. This is the feeling the folks at Gasworks Art Park want to bring to Melbourne with the Boardwalk Republic.
After Dark Theatre has partnered with Gasworks to bring Boardwalk Republic to Melbourne this Fringe Festival. From 23 September until 4 October, the arts park will play host to more than 60 different shows across all genres of performance.
What sort of shows can you expect from an event inspired by the boardwalk fairs of America? There's the eerily silent antics of The Last Mime Standing: a post-apocalyptic mime show. There's the Carnival of Rustic Dreams, an 'imaginarium of magic, circus, whimsy and fantasy'. There's Lacrima, a tumbling show with a darker take on the circus family. There's even '10 Shades of Temptation', a show particularly for the ladies by MenXclusive.
As well as the theatrical tidbits on offer, Boardwalk Republic will feature food trucks, craft stalls, art and music. Many of these entertainments are free, and family-friendly.
The festival is particularly friendly to the budget, with low-price tickets as well as the free entertainments. Tickets start at $6 and go up to $45, with VIP passes starting at $80 for five shows.
