I'm a freelance writer living in Perth. Having 2 young kids with endless energy, we are always on the lookout for new outdoor activities.
Event: -
Take the kids out for the school holiday and beyond
September just passed has been quite a quirky month. Early on it had a couple of warm sunny days, followed by wet and windy days. Admittedly it made it a bit hard to enjoy the weekends when the weather's unpredictable. So here's to hoping October will be a real spring to sunshine and warm weather.

Awesome Festival
3-16 Oct
Where: Perth Cultural Centre
More info here.
Awesome Festival

October School Holiday wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Awesome Festival. There are many activities in all sorts of art forms, including literature, visual art, theatre, and more. Many of them are free of charge, so there's no excuse to let the kids languish at home during the holiday even if your pockets are let out.

Night Walk with Brandon Ballengee at Neil Hawkins Park and Bugfest
Sats, 3 and 10 Oct, starts 6pm
Where: Neil Hawkins Park, 200 Boas Ave, Joondalup
More info here.

Calling all bug lovers out there to join two fun evenings of family activities. On the 3rd Oct (6-10pm), New York Artist/ Environmentalist Brandon Ballengee will take us to a night walk, collect insect specimens, and conduct scientific activities. On the 10th Oct (6-9pm), kids can learn how to make a UV bug-attracting lantern, and explore the parklands at dusk. There will be live music (acoustic), bug themed activities, and kids under 12 years old can get your hands on a set of free junior entomologist kit. Bookings required separately for each of the two events.

Piazzarama Northbridge
Piazzarama Northbridge
Sun, 4 Oct 12-4pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr Lake & James Sts, Northbridge
More info here.

For this second Piazzarama of the 2015-2016 season, the theme is Community Safety and the two movies shown will be true to the theme:
  • Disney Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014, PG) 12-1.30pm

  • Firehouse Dog (2007, PG) 2.30-4pm

In between the two movies, there will be children's entertainment, including the regular baloon artists, roving characters, and face-painting. There will also be theme-related activities and stage-performances.

Frivolity at the Jetty
5-9 Oct; 10am-4pm
Where: Barrack St Jetty, Perth.
More info here.

Perth Playground Pass generally holds holiday activities around Murray St Mal, but this time around, they have free fun events at Barrack St Jetty. The only one you'd have to book for is the ukulele workshop on a cruise--what a novel and exciting idea. For the other activities you can just show up on any day of the second week of the school holiday. Animal story-telling will be at the Bells Function Centre (above Riverside Café) at following times: 10.20, 11.20, 12.20, 1.20, 2.20 & 3.20pm. Role-play as a junior vet will be on at every 10 minutes interval. Origami boat making workshop will also be around the whole time from 10am-4pm.

Walk the Zig Zag and Zig Zag Festival
Suns, 18 & 25 Oct, starts 10am
Where: The Zig Zag, Gooseberry Hill and Stirk Park, 18 Kalamunda Rd, Kalamunda
More info here.

Two events in Kalamunda celebrating the Zig Zag. Both community events will have stalls, activities, and entertainment. The difference is that Walk the Zig Zag (18 Oct 10am-1pm) will be done on the Zig Zag proper (with parking in Stirk Park) whereas the Zig Zag Festival (25 Oct, 10am-8pm) will be done at Stirk Park. This later one will go on until the evening with a parade and a concert scheduled for the later part of the program. But hey, they're scheduled for different weekends, so why not visit them both.

Mandurah Children's Festival
Sun, 25 Oct
Where: Eastern Foreshore, Mandurah.
More info here.

Mandurah Community invite families with children of all ages to attend and participate in this fun day out for children. The theme for this year is 'Earth' and to start with, you can sign up to for the dress-up competition with this theme. On the day, join in the free workshops and activities that will generally have something to do with one of the seven elements of Earth (Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Space, Metal and Wood).

Alcoa Children's Party
Tue, 27 Oct, 10am-2pm
Where: Ridley Green, Medina
More info here.

No doubt pre-school kids would sometimes envy their older siblings for all their fun activities they have with their school friends like disco, birthday parties, etc. Well, once a year, they could have their own party too. Kids under five are invited to this City of Kwinana's event celebrating Children's Week. The day out will be titled "Dream Green" (pictured right) with fun as well as educational activities promoting healthy lifestyle.

Free Flicks for Kids
Every Sat, 5.30-7pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr Lake & James Sts, Northbridge
More info here.

When you have nothing better to do on Saturday evening for the family, it's good to know that you can fall back on this faithful weekly event. It's free, it's entertaining, and it's easy to get to. Just hop on the bus to the city and walk one block from the Roe St Bus Station. Too easy. The offering for October has a scary-theme running, perfect prelude to Haloween:
  • 3 Oct: Coraline (2008, PG)

  • 10 Oct: Corpse Bride (2005, PG)

  • 17 Oct: Frankenweenie (2012, PG)

  • 24 Oct: Paranorman (2012, PG)
