If you're one of the few families left in Perth this summer, going nowhere for the holiday, don't despair. There is fun yet to be had, maybe even more as the crowd thins and there's more space for everyone.

** New Years Day Fireworks
Fri, 1 Jan; 3.30-8.30pm
Shelley Foreshore Park, Riverton Drive, Shelley**

City of Canning's annual New Year Day celebration has always attracted plenty of visitors. What it means is that you need to come early, secure your picnic space (close to the stage to enjoy the concert or close to Canning Riverfront to enjoy the fireworks without hindrance), and relax. The fun evening starts with children's activities (3.30-6.45pm), live music on stage featuring "Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys," and "Chain Reaction," ending with a display of fireworks at 8.15pm.

** School Holidays at the Museums

WA Shipwrecks Museum and Maritime Museum, Fremantle**

WA Shipwrecks Museum and Maritime Museum have a few things going this summer, and some of them are free of charge as follows:
Junior Fishing Clinic (WA Maritime Museum, Victoria Quay, Fremantle; 21 Jan, 9:30-11:30am): Kids 8-14 years (must be supervised by an adult) will learn some fishing basics like casting, fish handling, as well as how to be SunSmart. Bookings essential 1300 134 081.
Shipwreck Cove (WA Shipwrecks Museum, Cliff Street, Fremantle; 7-22 Jan, 10am-2pm): You're challenged to find treasures in the Shipwreck Cove summer sandpit.
Summer stories (WA Shipwrecks Museum, Cliff Street, Fremantle; 7-22 Jan, 10.30am): Every morning within this period, you can visit the Captain's Cabin for some sea-story time.

Sat 21 Jan, 5-6pm
Sunset Veranda, Scarborough Beach**

This is a hands on activity where kids age 4 or above can make mini Balloonie Ball, suitable for juggling, squeezing, or catching. It's part ot the annual [LINK=http://www.summersetartsfestival.com.au/]Summerset Arts Festival[/link], which is only getting bigger and better every year. Artists have to eat too, so not surprisingly most of the events are ticketed. But there are some sponsored events that allow us to join in for free, such as this one. Yay. For more events under the festival, click on the link above.

Skyworks
Thu, 26 Jan, 8-8:30pm
Langley Park**

At time of writing, details are not yet available on the City of Perth's plan. But I think we can safely assume tradition will prevail and the usual fun and parties can be had before the show on both sides of the river (Langley Park and South Perth foreshore). Check the website closer to the date for details.
