After the warmest spring on record, summer 2015/2016 has turned out to be quite bearable so far. Well, at least from my point of view and hopefully from yours too. Anyway, it's 2/3 gone and school is starting, so we're left with only weekends to enjoy precious family time in February. Make the best of the rest of summer and below is the list to help you do it.

**Summerset Arts Festival
When:** Sat 6 Feb

Summerset Arts Festival is the annual festival organised by the City of Stirling. They mostly catch the January school holiday market, however the tail end is one week into February, so these two are ones of the last events they have this year.
Salute the Sun Yoga - Kids Yoga (6 Feb 8-9am at Sunset Veranda, Scarborough Beach Reserve): Bring the kids and let them have an hour of fun and uplifting experience whilst learning the foundations of yoga and mindfulness.
Summerset Concert - Saskwatch & Little May (6 Feb 5-9.30pm at Carine Regional Open Space, Okely Rd (cnr Beach Rd), Carine): Free family-friendly concert headlined by Melbourne indie-soul band Saskwatch. Supporting Saskwatch will be Little May, who are not one but three lovely ladies ganging together in a cool band.

**Opera in the Park
When:** Sat 6 Feb 8-9.20pm
Where: Langley Park, Perth

This is the City of Perth's annual free event and the title for this year is " Gianni Schicchi ," a one-act comic opera by Puccini. This opera is sung in Italian, however there will be English subtitles displayed across the bottom of large screens at Langley Park. Family entertainment starts at 6pm, so come early to secure a good spot for your rug, bring your picnic dinner, and you're set for the evening. Alternatively, you can also watch this at Northbridge Piazza as the performance will be simulcast to the outdoor LED screen there.

Piazzarama
When: Sun 7 Feb; 12-4pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr Lake & James Sts, Northbridge

The theme for Piazzarama this month is 'Space and Science,' an appropriate tribute perhaps to the start of the school term. But who says science is only associated with school work? It can be weekend fun too. If you don't believe me, just come to this event. As usual, there will be two movies to sandwich the entertainment in between:
12-1.45pm: Wall-e (2008, G)
2.30-4pm: Robots (2005, G)
**Sunset @Subi
When:** Every Sundays in Feb; 5-7pm
Where: The City of Subiaco

The end of summer marks the end of outdoor music performances, so make use of these last lazy Sunday afternoons. Bring a picnic, and be lazy; or get up and dance--your choice. The schedule for Feb are as follows:
7 Feb at Oak Lawn, UWA Campus, Hackettt Dr, Crawley: Blow The House Down
14 Feb at Lake Jualbup, cnr Excelsior & Evans Sts, Shenton Park: Mod Squad .
21 Feb at Lake Jualbup, cnr Excelsior & Evans Sts, Shenton Park: The Australian Santana Experience .

**Home
When:** Sat 13 Feb, from 7.30pm
Where: Langley Park, Perth

Home is Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF)'s opening event. It's a one-time special concert featuring performances by Perth top artists including Tim Minchin, Shaun Tan, Tim Winton, John Butler Trio, and more. It won't be just a normal concert where performers perform on a normal stage though, instead, it promises to be " concert spectacular, with a dynamic visual backdrop ." Langley Park and surrounding area is expected to be busy on the day, so catch public transport where you can to avoid unnecessary traffic jam.

**Chinese New Year Fair
When:** Sun 14 Feb; 12-9pm
Where: Northbridge

The Chinese New Year is the most important festival for Chinese people. In China, most people would take time off work, go back to their family home, and have a family feast/ party that can last for days. Even though we don't have it as big here in Perth, we could celebrate it together on this day, where people from all culture and background are invited to this one big community party. The main locations involved in the day would be (all in Northbridge):
James St (Street parade 12-5pm; food & market stalls all day)
Lake St (Rides & games all day)
Chinatown (Multicultural performances 12-6pm)
Northbridge Piazza (Kids entertainment 12-4pm; multicultural concert 7.15-9pm)
For a detailed program for the day, visit the event's webpage . Oh, and BTW, the real date for Chinese New Year this year is actually 8 Feb and 2016 is the Year of the Monkey.

**Perth Writers Festival Family Day
When:** Sun 21 Feb, from 9am
Where: Perth Writers Festival Precinct, near the Arts Faculty, UWA Campus, Crawley

Perth Writers Festival is a faithful part of PIAF annually. They always have a family day conducted on a Sunday where we can drop in UWA Campus and mingle with our own Perth writers and illustrators as well as those from further afield. If you like Harry Potter, you can help colour in Diagon Alley mural on the day. If you're into Andy Griffith's treehouse books, help build one from recycled materials. Or, if you're more into rhyming hip-hop raps, there's an event for you too. There are also talks by writers and illustrators (some ticketed). The full program is out now through a brochure in the West Weekend Magazine on 16 January 2016.

**Screenkids
When:** 26-28 Feb, from 10am
Where: Subiaco Arts Centre, 180 Hammersley Rd, Subiaco

This is another offering from PIAF 2016, in which we are invited to see how digital innovation can be used to entertain children through various interactive installations (Minecraft is not the only great digital innovation out there). The animated film part of this program is ticketed, however the other digital exhibition is free of charge. This include 'Shadow Tables' (playing with light and colour), 'Digital Drawing Wall,' and 'Headrush' (a race through a virtual world).

And lastly, since 2016 is a leap year, on Monday 29 February, spare a thought for those boys and girls who were born on this day 4, 8 or 12 years ago. Send up birthday wishes for them to the sky, enough to last them until 2020.
