September means spring, wildflowers, and sunshine. What a treat. We will start as we start every spring: with a reminder that Kings Park is a must visit in September, no matter how long you've lived in Perth and how many hundred times you've visited this place. If you have a visitor from out of town/ country, by all means, take them there, not just to admire the city view, not just to see the War Memorial, but also to take a stroll amongst the papery everylastings, the stately kangaroo paws, the colourful banksias and pea flowers, the bottlebrushes full of busy-bees and birds, and all other types of our state's wildflowers that are too numerous to mention here.

**Kings Park Festival
When:** Whole month of September
Where: Kings Park
More info here .

I don't think I need to repeat myself and wax lyricals about the amazing wildflowers you can see at Kings Park at this time of year. So instead, I'll use this paragraph to mention some of the additional fun things families can do on top of enjoying the live show display given by the flowers. A different type of shows can be had in this months, namely:
Santos Live (5, 6, & 13 Sep, Pioneer Women's Memorial): A live music show on stage to entertain the whole family with the following schedule for Saturday 5 Sep: 2Che 10.30-11.30am; Summer Soul 12-1.30pm; and Stratosfunk: 2.15-4pm. On Sunday 6 Sep, it would be: TRISK 10.30am-12pm; Junkadelic 12.30-2pm; and Cathrine Summers Quartet 2.30-4pm. Lastly, the stage will be back alive on Sun 13 Sep with: Jacob Diamond 10.30am-12.15pm; Helen Shanahan 12.45-2.30pm; and Tired Lion 3-4pm.
Adorables Florables (Sat & Sun, Botanic Garden): This bunch of colourfully-costumed ladies and gentlemen will rove the garden every weekend in Sep from 11am to 3pm to compete for kids' attention and photo opportunities
Backyard Botanicals Day (Sat 19 Sep, Synergy Parkland): In Kings Park Festival pasts, Synergy Parkland has been forgotten, but not this year. This is a new event targetting gardening activities for kids. And of course the usual fun stuff like music and roving characters will be there to brighten up the day.
There's also the Fantastic Faraway Festival on 12 Sep 10.30am-2.30pm at the Lotterywest Family Area. This one has a gold-coin entry fee per child, so I can't list it as a free event, but hey, 1$ for a day's worth of fun is surely worth it, not to mention that the money goes straight back into maintaining our beautiful Kings Park so we can enjoy it for free for the other 364 days of the year.

**Piazzarama Northbridge
When:** Sun 6 Sep 12-4pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr Lake & James Sts, Northbridge
More info here .

After three months winter hibernation, Piazzarama Northbridge is back. This is a staple of our family activities: it's regular, outdoor, and yet doesn't require us to drive all the way out of metropolitan Perth. On the day, we can expect:
The regulars: balloon artist, face-painters, & roving characters (don't be shy, they're happy to share a joke or pose for selfies)
Spider mountain-climbing wall
Craft workshop: Make your Dad a special Father's Day key-ring and/or mask
And on the stage/ big screen, the schedule of the show would be:
12-1.30pm: Movie-The Lion King (1994, G)
1.30-2pm: Outdoor Adventure Show-Josephine & Goggles
2-2.30pm: Outdoor Adventure Show-Safety First Crew
2.30-4pm: Movie-A Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014, PG)

**National Ballooning Championships
When:** Until 6 Sep
Where: Northam and surrounds
More info here .

Hot air balloons are always interesting things to watch as they're generally so colourful and inspire so much imagination. I'm not great with heights (even ferris wheels give me jitters), so I'm not going on a hot air baloon anytime soon, but I'm happy to watch them float by and imagine where it may take us, both literally and metaphorically. In this case, the baloons will take the pilots who have come from all around the world from the start to the target point, and I guess that's where the skills are judged: whether or not they are able to steer the baloons exactly where they want them to go, despite natural elements like wind, air pressure, and temperature trying to get them elsewhere. To watch them do this, visit the area of Northam from 28 Aug till 6 Sep. Weather permitting, there will be something to watch every morning and afternoon.

**Goat vs Sheep Science
When:** Sat, 12 Sep 1.45-4pm
Where: Pick up 1.30pm Weld St, Gingin, opposite Shire Office
More info here .

If you're thinking of getting sheep or goats, or maybe simply dying to know what the differences are between the two of them, book yourself into this event and find out the good and the bad of both as you are treated to a tour of their Gingin home. This even is part of the Gingin Science Festival & please note following: no smoking, wear practical footwear, and supervise children.

**Play dough from scratch
When:** Fri 18 Sep 11-11.30am
Where: Amherst Village Library, 2 Holmes St, Southern River.
More info here .

If you are a young family with pre-school kid(s), this workshop would be perfect for you. Bring your child/ baby along and learn how to make playdough at home and why playing playdough is good for the young ones. Bookings required at 9498 9498 or
[email protected].

**Grow, Dig, Eat
When:** Sat 19 Sep 10am-1pm
Where: The Meeting Place Community Centre, 245 South Tce, South Fremantle.
More info here .

This is multiple-events all in the same theme, done back-to-back in the same location. However they have their own separate booking pages, so do book yourself in properly into the correct ones that you're interested in:
Seeds & Seedlings Swap (10am-1pm): Bring your organic seedlings or seeds to share and swap with others who might have something different from you.
The History of Florence Community Garden (10.30-11am): Teresa Rocchi will tell us about the people and stories behind South Fremantle's Florence Community Garden.
Creating Edible Gardens (11-11.30am): Brooke Sparkles Murphy will show us how to turn your backyard into a pantry full of fresh produce all year long.
Bushtucker Show and Tell (11.30am-12pm): This is a show and tell that will allow us to learn how to use traditional herbs and spices into our everyday cooking. There will be tasty morsels to taste too.
Music in the Garden (12-1pm): Singer-songwriter Tom Fisher will entertain us with his version of Saturday Music in the Garden (a bit of classic southern rock, blues, & alternative country).

**Bindaring Park Family Day
When:** Sun 20 Sep
Where: Bindaring Park, Hyland Street, Bassendean.
More info here .

Bindaring park is a wetland connected to the Swan River within the boundary of the Town of Bassendean and the town council would like to celebrate the park through a family day scheduled on the 20 Sep 2015. At time of writing, no further details are available yet, but I'm sure when time is nearer the town council would post something on their website .

**Skateboarding Clinics
When & where:**
5 Sep 11am-1pm: Esplanade Youth Plaza (Age 5 & up, max 35 participants)
5 Sep 11am-3pm: Narrogin Skatepark (Best Tricks)
12 Sep 10am-12pm: Thornlie Skatepark (All Ages)
13 Sep 10am-12pm: Leederville Skatepark (All Ages)
26 Sep 11am-1pm: Rockingham PCYC Skatepark (All Ages)
27 Sep 11am-1pm: Manning Skatepark (Intermediate)
More info here .

I wonder if many people know that Skateboarding WA runs free clinics for people of different ages and skill levels. It aims to be as inclusive as possible, even providing the skates and helmets to those who don't have their own but want to learn anyway. Just rock up on the day at the specified start time and they'll register you in. That's too easy.
