I'm a freelance writer living in Perth. Having 2 young kids with endless energy, we are always on the lookout for new outdoor activities.

Where to take the family this weekend?
What's in store for us this month? It's hard to top last month's Giants, that's for sure. But surely there are other consolation prizes for us Perth families looking for exciting and fun activities to visit on weekends. Let's start with the long weekend. There are a few options there, and with three long days to fill, why not try them all.

Point Walter Family Concert 2015
Sun 1 Mar; 4.30-8.30pm
Where: Point Walter Foreshore, Honour Ave, Bicton
More info here.

This City of Melville's event kicks off the month nicely with a family-friendly concert full of music and dancing. Off the stage, there are various other activities such as face painting, balloon twisting and a bouncy castle. Don't go home early, as you wouldn't want to miss their fireworks finale over the Swan River.

Piazzarama Northbridge - World of Crickets
Sun 1 Mar, 12noon-6.30pm
Where: Piazzarama Northbridge, cnr James & Lake Sts, Northbridge.
More info here.

First Sunday of the month is Piazzarama time. The cricket theme this time around is to coincide with Australia co-hosting the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. There will be cricket-related games, roving characters, and giveaways. The movies on offer, unsurprisingly, are family sports flicks although only the 4pm one is cricket-related:

The Future Postal Service
1-2 Mar, 10am-2.30pm
Where: Perth Cultural Centre
More info here.

This is a continuation from last month's Perth Festival free events. I mention it again here as I suspect lots of families just focused on the Giants last month (understandable, of course). So it's time to move on, people. This one is an opportunity for the kids to role-play all the steps involved in posting a postcard: from making one to delivering it to the "recipient."

Sculpture by the Sea
6-23 Mar
Where: Cottesloe Beach, Cottlesloe
More info here.

This is an annual event not to be missed. It goes on for almost three weeks, so plenty of opportunity to visit and enjoy the curious sculptures. Be sure to go inside the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club building (upstairs) as they have small indoor sculptures that are sometimes related to and not less interesting than the big outdoor ones.

Free Flicks for Kids 2015
Every Saturdays
Where: Piazzarama Northbridge, corner James & Lake Sts, Northbridge.
More info here.

This month's offerings of Free Flicks for Kids are a bit newer than usual, including The Lego Movie and Rio 2 (both just released last year). So bring the kids and re-watch their recent favourite in a big screen.

City of Vincent - Summer Concerts
Sundays, 8 & 22 Mar
Where: See below
More info here.

This is an annual event organised by the City of Vincent. There are two concerts left of the series for the month of March, so here goes:

Splashfest at Swanbourne Reserve
Sun 8 Mar, 2-5pm
Where: Swanbourne Reserve, Odern Crescent, Swanbourne
More info here.

Summer and water play has always been a close pairing and if you need any proof, just visit any water playground in and around Perth such as the one in Hyde Park. They're always full any weekend, both with locals and visitors. And to give the kids variety, why not visit this one-day only event full of free water games, such as Water Wars, Zorb Balls in Water, Giant Water Slide, Dunk Tank, and Slip n Slide. I bet you it would be hard for the kids not to enjoy themselves there. And if there are enough of us showing up, they might make this into an annual event, wouldn't that be great.

Sundowners@Mandurah Ocean Marina Family Concert
Sat 28 Mar, 3-6pm
Where: Keith Holmes Reserve in the Mandurah Ocean Marina
More info here.

In the last weekend of March, there is this family concert that offers more than just music. There will be children entertainment to keep the kids from being bored. And there will of course be the main course of stage concert featuring Howie Morgan and Frenzy.

Guildford Heritage Festival
Sun 29 Mar, 9am-4pm
Where: Stirling Square, Guildford
More info here.

To close the month, why not do something different for a change. After weekends of music and kids games, shift your point of view by visiting the Guildford Heritage Festival, where the entertainment would be unusual, to put it mildly. You might meet a British soldier from the 1860 in full uniform (not quite Richard Sharpe or Napoleonic war era, only about 50 years off). Or an axeman with his weapon of choice, ready to chop logs into smithereens. If they're not to your liking, there are plenty of other heritage items to see, including vehicles, dances, collectibles, and costumes. There will be food and drinks to purchase, so you can spend the whole day on site if you wish.
