2. Australian Open Festival Can't get tickets to the tennis? Then head to the next best thing - The Australian Open Festival. Free entry daily from 7:00 am to 11:00pm. The festival includes food and drink for purchase, free entertainment for kids and grown ups, live music, and tennis action on the big screen. Monday 18th January through to Sunday 31st January, at Birrarung Marr, Batman Avenue.
Celebrating queer art and culture by hosting a variety of free and ticketed events, the program includes a carnival at Alexandra Gardens, T Dance, Pride March, a variety of performing and visual arts, and social events. January 17th to February 7th. View the full program at www.midsumma.org.au
4. Sunset Sounds The City of Stonnington presents Sunset Sounds; three free outdoor concerts on Sundays in January. Enjoy live music, food from some of Melbourne's best food trucks, and beautiful garden surroundings. The Audreys (Sunday January 10), Emma Donovan and The PutBacks (Sunday January 17), Dave Graney and The MistLY (Sunday January 24).
5. Australia Day at Docklands Enjoy great food and drink for purchase, great atmosphere and awesome free music entertainment at the Main Stage, New Quay Piazza from 4:00pm-11:00pm. Food zone will be at Upper Piazza.
Then for the highlight of the night, be dazzled by the fireworks spectacular from 9:45pm-10:00pm; viewed from around Victoria Harbour, including the NewQuay Piazza and Promenade, Harbour Esplanade and Victoria Harbour Promenade.
Running from January 16th to 26th, at 2 locations: NGV International at 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne and The Ian Potter Centre, Federation Square. This festival hosts a range of creative workshops and activities for children, all for free! Open 10am-3pm daily, and concluding with special performances and events on Australia Day.
