The summer heat reaches its peak, school is back and the Christmas holiday is a long-forgotten memory. Don't worry, there is still plenty of free activities happening in Perth this month, which is great if you went a little too hard over summer and are running low on funds.

Romance Under the Stars
Saturday 2nd February, 7.30 to 10.30pm
Pat O-Hara Reserve, Bayswater

Those old romantics, Perth Symphony Orchestra plus special guests Justin Burford (End of Fashion) and Paula Parore (AViiDA) are hosting another exciting concert. Expect to hear tunes covering a wide range of romantic styles from INXS to U2, Pharrell Williams to Adele. Bring a picnic or buy dinner from the onsite food trucks. Parking is limited so plan in advance.

Little Mermaid Singalong
Saturday 2nd February, 7pm
Northbridge Piazza
FREE

Not just for kids, but all Little Mermaid lovers, this is not only a special singalong version of the movie shown on the big Northbridge Piazza screen, but a special choral performance by women's choir Tone Deft. Tone Deft appear first then settle in for the movie. Beanbags and lyrics sheets provided, and everyone is encouraged to wear costumes.

City of Perth Opera in the Park
Saturday 2nd February, 8pm to 10.30pm
Supreme Court Gardens

A very different type of musical event, the West Australian Opera will be presenting Verdi's masterpiece La Traviata, which is about love, hope and second chances. This popular event is family friendly (except for the time) and presented by LotteryWest. Bring a rug and some comfy cushions.

Summer Concerts in the Park
Every Sunday in February, from 5.30-7pm
Parks throughout Nedlands

This popular series of free concerts takes places in Nedlands, with a live show plus food trucks and free kids activities each weeks. The line-up is as follows:
Sunday 3 February - Adam Hall & The Velvet Playboys - Lawler Park, Floreat
Sunday 10 February - Monty Cotton & The Threads - Mason Gardens, Dalkeith
Sunday 17 February - Velvet Amps - Allen Park, Swanbourne

Fringeworld Festival

Fringe World is one of Perth's biggest and most diverse events and will be running until February 17th. There are still many free events across the city, including comedy, mermaids, karaoke, demonstrations and so much more.

Harbour Sundays
Every Sunday in February, from 5-9pm
West Australian Maritime Museum
FREE

Set overlooking stunning Victoria Quay on the balcony at the Museum, Harbour Sundays is presented by RTR FM and consists of four weeks of free local music and DJs and a bar. The line is as follows:
Sunday 3rd February: Fuzz Toads, Dom Mariani and The Majestic Kelp, DJ Jamie Mac (Homegrown)
Sunday 10th February: Grace Armstrong, Simone & Girlfunkle, DJ Rhian Todhunter (Rockin' The Roots)

Boorna Waanginy

Part of the Fringe Festival but big enough to deserve its own mention, this popular event is also known as The Trees Speak, and this year has been extended to 4 nights. This incedible illumination display across Kings Park celebrate Indigenous culture and WA's unique environment by creating the sights and sounds of the six Nyoongar seasons. This is a walkthrough event that is done at your own pace, although it is suggested it takes around 45 minutes from start to finish plus another 25 minutes to walk back to the start.

Perth Chinese New Year Fair
Sunday 10th February from midday to 9pm
James Street (between William Street and Lake Street), and Chinatown Northbridge

Celebrate the Chinese Year of the Pig, which symbolises luck, wealth, honesty and general prosperity. Sounds pretty good to me! This huge multicultural event runs long into the night with lion and dragon dancing, a parade and multicultural concert, plus stalls, games and rides.

Lunar New Year Festival @ Hillarys

Sorrento Quay Boardwalk - Hillarys Boat Harbour

If you prefer a smaller celebration, head to Sorrento Boardwalk to celebrate the Lunar New Year with colourful performances running from 11.30am including Lion Dancing, Chinese Dancing and Chinese Orchestra.

Jambo African Festival

With over 50 musical performances by local and visiting African artists, JAMBO is one of the biggest African festivals to be held in Perth. Enjoy cultural dances, delicious African food, fashion shows, plus arts and craft exhibits and market stalls.

Perth Makers Market

One of Perth's biggest and best handmade markets, the Makers Market has over 150 stalls from local artisans and crafters, businesses and foodies. Kids will enjoy the fabulous Pirate Playground and there is dedicated parking with gold coin donation to Rotary.
