Since February this year, a number of Sydney's Inner West councils have collaborated to host free 'eco-living' workshops under the banner of 'Treading Lightly'. This collaboration has allowed for a broad-range of events, that offer many eco-friendly ideas for the realities of inner city living.

With so many of us now living in the inner areas of Sydney, it can be difficult to incorporate eco-friendly practises into our lives. It comes down to redefining our concept of what that looks like - and that's where great initiatives like these workshops come into play.

A case in point is the recent 'Worm Farming for the Office' workshop which was hosted by Leichhardt council. The workshop explored how to start a worm farm in your workplace, the benefits of it, and how Leichhardt Council themselves do just that. The council also supplies worm farms, bins and compost supplies which you can order from the council's website.

There is a strong focus on sustainability in these workshops, as this is a critical element in any new way of doing things. It changes a concept from being simply a good idea, to being something people can incorporate into their lives long-term.

Furthermore, the topics covered assist more than just the environment. Many of the practises discussed are cost-saving or have health benefits. Some of the workshops held so far include Balcony Gardening, Transform: Upcycled Jewellery, the Basics of Permaculture and Bike Maintenance for Teenagers.

With forward-thinking concepts like these, the workshops have proven popular, so booking is essential. Also, because of limited places, those living within the participating local government areas of Strathfield, Burwood, Leichhardt, City of Canada Bay and Ashfield are given first chance to book.

Some of the events to be held in the next two months include: Upcycling Homewares, Ethical Investing, and Veggie Gardens for Small Spaces. There will even be a Books and CD swap hosted by Leichhardt Council. Refer to this brochure for the other upcoming workshops.

Make use of this free joint-council initiative and sign up for an event or two. For more information and booking, contact the host council or book online here .
