Because of recent disruptions V-Line is offering free train and coach services until 7th February 2016.

While it is free it is still suggested you make bookings in order to get seats. Conductors will not however be checking tickets. Here are some suggestions about where to go.

Castlemaine

Wander around the historic township where you can also take a ride on the Victorian Goldfields Railway (not free). A couple of the caravan parks are accessible from the station such as The Big4 Holiday Park which is right next to the Botanic Gardens and Castlemaine Central Cabin & Van Park is opposite the IGA.

Warrnambool

At three hours a lengthy but certainly a great train trip. Great beaches at the other end. Fantastic and huge adventure playground for the kids at Lake Pertobe. Here were my adventures when I travelled by train.

Ballarat

You would need to get a bus to Sovereign Hill and Lake Wendouree is walkable but it a bit of a hike. But right near the station is the Ballarat Art Gallery and I love having a drink in old worldy Craig's Hotel. For my train trip there and further suggestions click here.

Woodend

Have lunch at Holgate Brewhouse and wander around this charming township. For some great lunch spots and an award winning vanilla slice click here.

Bendigo

Having been to Bendigo by train I know the gallery is certainly walkable. They have some great exhibitions. Click here. For something different stay at the Art Series Schaller Studios.

Geelong

The Festival of Sails is on and the waterfront is well worth a look with its swimming pool, famous bollards, heritage carousel and many excellent restaurants.

Bairnsdale

Some nice architecture, good pub food and 13 opshops. What more could you ask for! More information on travelling there by train and what to do by click here.

These are just a few suggestions but you could go as far afield as Echuca, Swan Hill, Mildura or other places in Gippsland. Don't forget reaching the border means you are half-way to Sydney.

You can find details at: V-Line
Further Tips:

Bring your own food.
Bring that book you have been dying to read or podcasts to listen to.
Bring a water bottle as there is a cold water tap at the end of each carriage.
Coffee in the dining cart isn't half bad.
