Free Family Fun at Christmas
Christmas is just around the corner. Letter boxes are choc-a-block with gift catalogues, trees are decorated and plans are being made. Soon children will count the sleeps to the big day. Mixed with all the excitement, joy and festivity, there is a cost; or is there? In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, Melbourne has turned on so much for free you will be spoilt for choice. Here are just some of the free events on offer across Greater Melbourne. So, check your calendars and treat the kids for free.

Myer Christmas Window
Sunday 6th Nov. to Thursday 24th Dec. 2022
This year's much anticipated Myer Christmas window has been unveiled, continuing a tradition that now spans 67 years. The display this year celebrates 100 Years of Disney. The displays feature Mickey and Minnie, the Lion King, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, and more. The windows, at the Myer store in 314-336 Bourke Street, Melbourne are on display from 7:30am to 10.30pm daily from 6th November 2022 to the 24th December 2022. Santaland at Myer, Melbourne
Sunday 6th Nov. to Thursday 24th Dec. 2022
After you've had a look at the Myer windows head on up to level six of the Bourke Street Store to Santaland. Walk through the Giftorium to the Myer Mural Hall, where they have set up a Disney Maze for the little ones. They'll have some fun and you can take some lovely photos. Of course, Santa will be at Santaland, and it is free for your children to see him, although bookings are required as he is very busy. If you decide to purchase photos, there is a cost to that, but the folks at Santaland are quite happy for you to take your own photos. Click here to book. Myer Melbourne's Christmas trading hours are 10am to 7pm Monday to Wednesday, 10am to 9pm Thursdays and Fridays and 9:30am to 7pm on Saturdays.

Melbourne's Christmas Square and Santa's Workshop
From Friday 25th Nov. to 25th Dec. 2022
Head on down to Christmas Square (Federation Square) to check out Melbourne's amazing 16-metre-high LED Christmas tree. Children will look on with wonder at the city's giant tree with all its sparkles and baubles. Santa's workshop will be open from Saturday 26th Nov. to 24th Dec. 2022, 10am to 5:30pm and to 7:30 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, so don't miss out on a visit to the man himself. Melbourne Christmas Projections
Friday 25th Nov. to Sunday 25th Dec.2022
It's a big Christmas projections show this year with Flinders Street and the Melbourne Town Hall transformed into Christmas wonders in spectacular light shows. The light shows will run from 9pm to 11pm from Friday 25th November to Sunday 25th December.

Besides four lighting colour treatments the Town Hall at 90-130 Swanston Street, will be wrapped in a bow and adorned with huge Christmas wreaths, a koala on a candy cane, a singing reindeer, penguins, and nutcracker soldiers.

The Christmas Projections on the Flinders Street buildings opposite Federation Square will scroll through six amazing displays including Christmas candy, festive decorations, winter wonderland, and native flora.

Christmas Pop-up Playground at Southbank
Friday 25th Nov. to Saturday 24th Dec. 2022
Children will delight in prancing about on the light-up dancefloor, swinging on the giant illuminated bell, playing in an interactive canopy of flower petals or conducting a Lightphonic orchestra. The pop-up playground is at Queensbridge Square, 3 Queens Bridge St, Southbank. It will be open all day from Friday 25th November to Saturday 24th December 2022. Ro Ho Ho Christmas Installation on the Yarra
Friday 25th Nov. to Sunday 25th Dec.2022
Take the kids to see Santa's sleigh afloat on the Yarra River. The sleigh, which resembles a tug boat, is drawn by reindeer and pulls a giant sack of presents. At night it is lit up and makes quite the spectacle. You will find Ro Ho Ho at Northbank between Evan Walker Bridge and Sandridge Bridge in Melbourne. It can be viewed from Friday 25th November to Sunday 25th December 2022 any time of the day or night, but is at its best at night. Click here for more details and a map.

Christmas at Crown
Thursday 1st Dec. to Saturday 24th Dec. 2022
Crown is offering free digital photos with Santa in the Crown Atrium every day from 12pm to 6pm from the 1st to the 24th of December 2022. In addition, the place truly comes alive from Thursdays to Sundays when there will be roaming performers, Christmas carols, face painting, balloon twisting, Mrs Claus, Samoyed puppies and much, much more. Frankston Christmas Festival of Lights
Saturday 26th Nov. 2022
This festival is now in its 25th year and there is no doubt the City of Frankston knows how to throw a good party. Don't miss out on the live music and Christmas carols on the legendary main stage, a North Pole Activity Centre, Santa visits from 5:30pm to 9:30 pm in Cube 37, kid's activities, rides and amusements, and foods from around the world.

Santa's Grand Arrival Parade is always a highlight. The parade begins at the corner of High and Young Street at 5pm and travels towards Davey Street to Santa's House in Cube 37. You'll want to keep the kids awake for the evening grand finale, the lighting of the century old 30-meter-high Norfolk Pine Christmas tree and the fireworks display. The festival will run on Saturday November 26th, 2022 from 5pm to 10pm at the Frankston Arts Centre precinct, Davey Street and surrounds. Entry to the festival is free as is the children's show, Santa visits and craft activities at the Frankston Arts Centre. Rides, food, market stalls and amusements must be paid for. Carols by Candlelight at Jells Park, Wheelers Hill
Sunday, 4th Dec. 2022
The locals know Jells Park is a great space all year round, but at Christmas it becomes extra special as the City of Monash puts on its annual Carols by Candlelight. Monash community members are invited to attend this fantastic free event. This year, award-winning cabaret performer Melissa Langton, will compere the event. At 5:30pm, the event kicks off with performances by Team Dream and the Oakleigh Primary School Choir.

The main concert begins at 7:30pm and includes the Monash Carols Band, an impressive line-up of soloists and a special appearance by Santa. If the weather is good, the night will end with a spectacular fireworks display at 9:15pm. Who could ask for anything more? The event runs from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, Sunday, 4th December 2022 at Jells Park, Waverley Road, Wheelers Hill. For more details including transport options and parking click here.
