No fuss free & cheap school holiday ideas
School Holidays are fast approaching and there is nothing worse than having bored kids lingering around for two weeks.
Don't break the bank and spend some quality time with the whole family these school holidays with my list of 50 free and cheap school holiday activities below:
1. Go Camping You do not have to spend a thing on this activity; you can camp in the backyard or even in the living room and no need to stress if you do not have a tent - blankets and chairs work just fine and it is more fun to build!
2. Movie Day at Home
The perfect rainy day activity with a movie marathon, homemade popcorn and if you do not have any kid or family-friendly movies, make your own movies with a camcorder.
3. Green Thumb! This has to be one of the best ways to get the kids really involved with nature and healthy eating. Seeds are very cheap to buy and you do not even need a garden for this. Most of the fun comes from finding containers to recycle as pots, painting them and then planting away. Try to choose something that grows fast, so the kids can see it growing during the school holidays.
4. Surfs Up Hit the beach! The only expense is for fuel, snacks or public transport fees. Take with your buckets to build sandcastles, beach balls or cricket set and spend the day having fun in the sand. 5. Sydney Observatory It is free admission to explore and they also have a range of free activities for the kids. If you want to do day or night tours, there is a fee. Click here for website. Cost: Free admission, Day Tours Family ticket: $26 or Night Tours Family Ticket: $60
6. Culture Time Explore your local museums or galleries or take a trip into town and explore the many museums and galleries that are free.
Cost: Free and/or travel expenses.
7. Picnic in the Park
Pack a picnic and go to your local park or botanical garden and explore the wonders and then enjoy a family picnic under the trees or by a pond.
8. Scavenger Hunt
Hide treasures around the house and garden and go on a scavenger hunt with the kids, or for a nature experience go to your local botanic gardens and try to find certain leaves, rocks, flowers, birds etc. For extra fun, draw up a map that you can try to follow.
9. Farmer for a Day
Visit a farm. Many farmers will be happy to give short tours to groups of kids and they might even be able to pet some of the animals too and help around the farm!
10. Archaeologist Fun
Dig up some cheap dinosaur toys in the backyard and get the kids to dig them out or for a "realistic" effect. Why not buy some inexpensive replica dinosaur bones online or at a museum.
11. The Inner Artist
Let the kid's imaginations go wild as they create salt ornaments. It is easy to make. Ingredients: 1 cup salt, 2 cups plain flour, 1 cup warm water, food colouring paintbrushes and paint. Varnish is optional.
Mix salt and flour and slowly stir in warm water until a thick consistency is achieved- you may require more water. Add a few drops of food colouring and knead for at least 5 mins, the longer you knead it the smoother it will be.
And create your ornament and bake at 100 'C for 2-3 hours, until completely dry. Cool and paint. Varnish if you desire.
12. Masquerade Party
Let the kids make their own mask using paper plates, elastic bands, paint, feathers, beads, glitter etc, and let them party around with their creations.
13. Close to Nature
Explore a National Park where there is an abundance of activities to enjoy such as bushwalking, camping, swimming in water holes or beaches, kayaking, cycling, wildlife spotting, bird watching and much more. Some National Parks require a fee up to $12 per car/ per day. Click here for the NSW National Park website.
14. Pretty Faces
Get a small face painting kit and spend the day painting the kids' faces and get them to do the same to you!
15. I am 'Board'
Board games never fail to impress, they are loads of fun and can keep the kids amused for hours. Perfect for a rainy school holiday too!
16. Bike Rides
The perfect way to enjoy quality time and the outdoors too.
17. Something smells fishy
Go fishing for the afternoon and catch dinner.
18. Fly Away
Make a kite and then fly it! The kids will love getting involved in making their own version of a kite and then flying their masterpieces.
19. Kids Masterchef
Have a day in the kitchen, where the kids can help make food. Pizza is always simple and fun to create. To make things more interesting have a competition to see who makes the best pizza and you can be the judge!
20. Friendship Day!
Have some of your child / children's friends over. Friends offer hours of endless fun.
