Free Camping at J.B. Plain, Dinner Plain

Fancy ticking off the 'camping in the snow' checkbox in the bucket list? J.B. Plain allows you to do just that, at no cost.

So, if you feel like a snow adventure that doesn't rip a hole through your pocket due to accommodate expenditure, this might be an interesting option to live out your snow season. Yes - that's what this is about: free accommodation at 1600m above sea level. It's not for softies though - preparedness is the key.

This is a walk-in campsite 11 km south-east of Mt Hotham, and it's relatively easy to find as it's just off the Great Alpine Rd. It's just a short drive around the corner from Dinner Plain. However, the sign is pretty small so make sure you keep your eyes peeled.

Especially during winter in the snow season, the Alpine National Park offers you one of the most scenic bush camping opportunities in Victoria.

Expect amazing sunsets and sunrises over the snow caked alps. Snow Camping in the park is suited to experienced hikers (preparedness is godliness) and campers that are self sufficient.

There is the J.B. Plain hut in the middle of the camping area that provides a supply of firewood (honour system) that's a great reprieve during a bad storm. Or, gather inside to make a nice cuppa' to share!
